There is a serious rodent infestation in Hong Kong. The Government’s Interdepartmental Pest Control Steering Committee met today (5th) to formulate a work plan and indicators for rodent and mosquito control this year. In the second quarter of this year, the authorities will distribute rodents in 50 monitored areas to the public. Suffering from reference index.

According to the authorities, by the middle of this year, monitoring data will be distributed to various departments through the government's geospatial information hub platform to facilitate early intervention.

According to the FEHD, following last year’s rodent infestation reference index survey, the number of monitored areas increased from 41 (approximately 2,300 bait sites) to 50 (approximately 2,700 bait sites); starting from the second quarter of this year, the The department will release the index of all 50 monitored areas to the public. For monitored areas with severe rodent infestations, the department will eliminate rodents at the relevant locations for one month and reassess the situation.

Earlier trial plans showed that enhanced surveillance mode can effectively control rodent infestation.

The department will also deploy thermal detection cameras in areas where the index continues to be high, so as to take targeted anti-rodent actions.

The Steering Committee met today to formulate indicators and plans for the new year's rodent control work, and promote the strengthening of the department's work.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is responsible for the placement of rodent baits and the use of mousetraps; the Housing Authority selects about 80 key housing estates to implement additional rodent prevention measures and publicity and education; the Highways Department conducts rear lane improvement projects as needed; the FEHD strengthens heat energy Detecting the application of video cameras, using video cameras to detect rat activities in all target communities in all districts of Hong Kong and monitoring areas with more serious rodents, strengthening the pertinence and effectiveness of rodent control operations; and improving the reference index survey of rodents , And actively encourage the public to keep the environment clean, cut off the source of food for rats, and try to deal with the root cause of the rodent problem.

Mosquito surveillance areas will increase to 64

In terms of mosquito control, this year's work indicators include eliminating mosquito breeding grounds; in monitoring areas where the Aedes albopictus mosquito trap index exceeds the alert level of 20%, prevention and control will be strengthened; maintaining the index in the monitored area not to exceed 40%; and This year, the Aedes albopictus density index newly added last year will set the corresponding reference level for mosquito prevention and control work.

In order to strengthen the monitoring of mosquitoes, the FEHD has replaced the old mosquito ovitrap with a new design since April last year, and directly counts the number of adult mosquitoes, thereby determining the mosquito trap index and additionally formulating a new density index. To show the widespread distribution of Aedes albopictus and quantify the activity of Aedes albopictus.

To further strengthen the surveillance of dengue fever vectors, the FEHD has increased the number of surveillance areas from 62 (approximately 3,360 mosquito traps) to 64 (approximately 3,440 mosquito traps) starting from January this year.

The FEHD will collate and review the district density index collected since April last year, and analyze the data of different seasons, with a view to establishing a reference level for the index before the end of this year, so that relevant departments can carry out the necessary mosquito prevention and control work in a timely manner.

The government believes that the city’s anti-mosquito and anti-mosquito operations have effectively curbed mosquitoes in the past two years, and intends to continue the relevant operation mode before the rainy season this year.

Various departments will inspect the site before the onset of the rainy season, clean up the mosquito breeding sites as soon as possible, and deploy more than 5,500 mosquito traps to kill adult mosquitoes.

The FEHD will closely monitor changes in local weather and notify all departments before the rainy season to initiate actions at the same time, including fogging.

Various departments will also continue to clean up mosquito breeding grounds during the operation, take timely targeted measures to prevent and control mosquitoes in response to the monitoring index, and continue to update the mosquito blackspot list.

A total of 3 policy bureaus and representatives of 20 government departments and agencies participated in today's meeting.
