Thousands are expected to participate today (Friday) in a huge nationwide demonstration in Umm al-Fahm against crime and murderous violence in Arab society in general, and in the city in particular.
In preparation for the protest, the police blocked Road 65 at the Megiddo junction to the west and the Mei Ami junction to the east - leading to the city.
This, while thousands of demonstrators are making their way to demonstrate in Umm al-Fahm, and despite an explicit appeal by the initiators of the demonstration yesterday to the police not to do so.
The Coastal District of the police said in response that the checkpoints allow buses to move towards the city, and that no one will be denied the right to come and demonstrate.
This is the eighth consecutive week that such demonstrations have taken place in the city since the attempted assassination on January 7 of former Islamic Movement leader Dr. Suleiman Agbaria, 63. On January 22, at the end of one of these protests, the young Muhammad Agbaria was shot dead. The 21-year-old returned home from a demonstration.
There is a rift between the municipality and the police, the city is demanding the removal of the local police station commander due to his statement in the media, and since last week the municipality also cut off contact from the area commander and suspended municipal policing with the Israel Police.

The following masses from across the country today come in the wake of last week's weekly demonstration, in which the police decided to change policy and not allow the blockage of the intercity road 65.
Against this background, she violently dispersed the demonstration right at the beginning and clashes broke out in which eight policemen and dozens of demonstrators were injured, including Mayor Dr. Samir Mahamid. Five were arrested, including four who were brought to court. All were released at the first hearing in
two and a half weeks. Before the election, all members of the joint list, members of the High Monitoring Committee of the Arab Public in Israel, heads of local authorities and organizations and other dignitaries, as well as representatives of peace and coexistence organizations from Israeli society in general, are expected to arrive, all in solidarity with Arab society.
