The Greens in Freising have positioned themselves against the planned concert and congress hall at the airport.

The city of Freising will play a key role in the project.

  • Investors with a regional connection to Freising are privately planning a concert and congress hall on an area south of the airport.

  • The Greens have again positioned themselves against the project.

  • The manager of the Olympic Park describes the new project as competition.

Freising / Airport - Olympiapark München GmbH sees it as a clear competitor to the Olympiahalle, the Greens and skeptics fear even more noise and traffic pollution for the region and for Freising.

The Munich Convention Center planned by SWM Real Estate GmbH on the airport grounds was the subject of an online information event on Thursday evening to which the Greens had invited.

And that is why the prevailing opinion of the project among the almost 60 participants was clear: Because of the many unanswered questions and great burdens, the project of a hall with a capacity of 22,000 should be rejected.

Of particular interest was what the managing director of Olympiapark München GmbH, Marion Schöne, had to report.

Because their message was clear: of course, if the MUCcc were built, it would compete with the Olympic Hall, which can hold 15,500 spectators.

Schöne resisted statements by SWM Real Estate Managing Director Lorenz Schmid that the Olympiahalle was technically not up to date and that it lacked multifunctionality.

Schöne emphasized that 120 million euros had flowed into the renovation of the "Oly" in the past few years and that "more functionality is not possible".

Admittedly, the hall is 50 years old and a single monument, so modernization is difficult.

But the visitors would appreciate the “certain retro charm”.

Fight for the cake: Olympiapark manager rejects cooperation

Schöne revealed that Schmid had already sought a conversation with Olympiapark GmbH in 2019 and presented the project - as it was still a pure concert hall.

When asked at the time whether synergy effects could be used, Schöne answered with a no.

The cake is not big enough for that.

The MUCcc would be a particularly big competition because it is apparently divisible so that there is not only space for 22,500, but also for 14,000 and 7,000 visitors.

And of course there will be a "price war" if the organizers ask about both halls.

It is difficult to say whether the fans will accept the new hall, which is not in the heart of Munich but in the “outlet”.

That certainly depends on the connections.

The Freising Member of the Green Party, Johannes Becher, listed the numerous unanswered questions about the project: Many things are still unclear, for example a noise report is still missing, there is also no traffic report, the FMG supervisory board has not yet agreed dealt with the topic, consequently it has not yet been decided whether the intended area will even be leased to SWM Real Estate.

However, Becher believes that the FMG supervisory board is based on the vote of the city of Freising: If the city rejects the project, the property will probably not be made available.

"The position of the city seems to be important to FMG," said Becher.

District vice-president wants peace at least on the weekend

He does not yet know whether the three FMG shareholders, Free State, City of Munich and the federal government, have to vote unanimously for the lease or, for example, the city of Munich can exercise its veto right by saying no.

Becher considers the question of how such an event hall can be classified as “airport-related” as particularly problematic (“nobody can seriously say that”).

Because that is actually the prerequisite for the hall to be built in the priority area of the airport.

One possibility would of course be to separate the area in the west of the MUC from the priority area of the airport.

But that would also have to happen for the area intended for the third runway, demanded the member of the state parliament.

Green City Councilor Manfred Drobny sees “no need” for an event arena.

In the discussion that followed, the opponents of the project mainly pointed out the additional burdens on the region: District Administrator Robert Wäger (Greens) said that in the late evening hours and on the weekends, there was at least some peace in the region from the traffic noise.

But then there would be the events in the MCC.

He feared that the airport would become “a 24-hour event site”.

Green voter “horrified” by the style of the event

For example, Green City Councilor and Freising's airport officer Manfred Drobny said that the region could not be expected to have such a project "without it being obvious that it was necessary to put it in front of the nose".

Josephine Countess von Brühl, an attacher and avowed Greens voter, was “appalled” by the style of the information event.

She would have wished for a little more “neutrality” and a discussion about facts instead of the attitude of “being against everything per se” and letting go of sarcastic remarks.

Because maybe the location at the airport, where there is already a lot of traffic, is better and more sensible than in a place where there has been no traffic congestion so far.

Becher countered: He would have liked to provide and discuss facts, but they don't exist yet.

Read more on the topic:

Especially in the pandemic, the planned concert and congress hall should become an anchor of hope for shaken industries.

Investors are backing this up with new figures.

It is the origin of some heated political debates: the planned Event Arena at Munich Airport.

Now the planners speak and make the opponents an offer.

A large event arena is being planned at Munich Airport.

The project is already dividing people's minds: Critics suspect that culture is dying, and an enormous increase in traffic is also feared.

After the vehement criticism of the Greens, the majority of the remaining Freising parties are now expressing themselves positively in relation to the event arena planned at Munich Airport.

Oberdings mayor meanwhile has concerns.
