Nearly half of the 34,000 residents (15,155) have already received the two doses of a vaccine against Covid-19 and in total, 41,318 doses have already been injected in Gibraltar, the government of the British territory announced in a statement.

"

We are gradually reaching the final stages of vaccination for the resident population

", continued the government, to which this advance of the campaign, started on January 9, will now allow "to

offer vaccines to cross-border workers

".

Despite the proximity to Spain very affected by the pandemic and a border that has always remained open, Gibraltar was relatively spared at first, thanks to a policy of testing and tracing cases.

But after a first death in November, his health situation became worrying in January, with a significant rise in the number of deaths and a surge in cases.

The toll of the pandemic in the enclave has so far been 93 dead and more than 4,200 cases.

Vaccination and strict restrictions taken from the end of last year have significantly reduced the incidence, i.e. the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which had for a time been one of the highest in Europe.
