Lyon: the La Martinière-Duchère high school, an establishment under reinforced protection

2021-03-05T17:58:34.529Z

FOCUS - The surroundings of the establishment of the sensitive district of La Duchère have been the scene of attacks for several months.

Thursday March 4, around thirty young people gathered in front of the Lycée Lyonnais La Martinière to indulge in urban violence, setting fire to eight vehicles.

All were hooded, obviously aware that around twenty CCTV cameras had been installed a few weeks earlier to fight against the insecurity that reigns in the neighborhood, and that the establishment had been placed under police protection the day before.

Measures taken after a series of attacks around the establishment.

But why is this particular high school subject to such surveillance?

The climate of violence that reigns today at the Lycée La Martinière Duchère is purely unacceptable.

Our high schools must be sanctuaries of the Republic,

”the president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region Laurent Wauquiez was indignant in a press release on February 1, alerted to the difficulties encountered by the establishment.

"

Usually, this high school pulls up the district, and there it is rather the district which pulls down this high school

", he laments to the

Figaro

.

An observation shared by parents of students.

"

Despite the excellence of La Martinière, I will not send my other children to this school, because of the insecurity that lurks around

", breathes Marina, mother of 5 boys, including Célestin *, 17 years old.

Schooled in the final year of the Lycée La Martinière-Duchère in the 9th arrondissement of Lyon, Célestin was violently assaulted when he left school.

One evening around 5 pm, while he was heading towards the bus stop which is only a few meters from the establishment, five young schoolchildren, masked and hooded, threw themselves on him: “

They caught him. from behind, by the hood, and they said 'we'll hit you until you give us what we want',

”says the mother of the family.

Célestin, "

who has been doing aikido for several years

", managed to keep his cool until the people at the bus stop intervene, called out by the voices of the attackers.

He was immediately transferred to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with brain edema and prescribed five days of ITT.

"It's the petty bourgeois bus stop that you can go and steal"

This has been going on for about six months, so we made arrangements with different mothers for carpooling: I especially don't want my son to go out alone.

Inside the school, children are not in danger, it is the environment around that must be monitored, especially the bus stop, which is known to be the bus stop for the petty bourgeois that we can go fly,

”says a parent of a student, whose son is one of the 2,300 adolescents attending school in La Martinière.

At the beginning of February, Laurent Wauquiez was already alarmed at the situation: he had gone there and proposed to the mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet to “

work together

” in order to “

invest resources to ensure security in La Duchère

”.

The elected had refused, indicating that "

the elementary rules of efficiency recommend not to superimpose the speakers.

We will be more efficient by remaining within the competences which are devolved to our respective communities

”.

I regret that, since his arrival, the mayor of Lyon has only underestimated security issues through ideology and sectarianism.

It's a mistake,

”emphasizes Laurent Wauquiez.

We are talking about kids aged 12-14 who attack teachers in the parking lot, gangs of young people who enter the high school in La Martinière to provoke the students, who insult and extort the students.

There is undoubtedly a security problem in the neighborhood,

”says the president of the region.

A month after Laurent Wauquiez's trip, Wednesday March 3, a meeting was organized to address the concerns of parents of students relating to the insecurity of the neighborhood, but also to certain behaviors within the establishment.

The prefect in charge of security Thierry Suquet as well as the deputy mayor for security of Lyon Mohamed Chihi were notably present.

"

We are going to provide an extremely strong response in order to suppress this behavior

", assures

Le Figaro

the deputy for security.

We have identified these aggressors, who are between 10 and 15 years old, and we are going to take action around three terms: prevention, surveillance and repression.

Thus, until the summer holidays, we will increase the presence of the municipal and national police around the school, especially at critical times, during the entry and exit of students, and we will install several CCTV cameras. .

Finally, we approached the Association Lyonnaise Tranquillité Médiation (ALTM), which will be responsible for training certain students in conflict mediation, because we want to focus on prevention by peers

”, specifies the elected official.

A threatened social mix

Contacted by

Le Figaro

, the Federation of Parents of Students (FCPE) said it was "

mixed

" in the face of the results of this meeting: "

on the one hand, parents are reassured by the decision to deploy law enforcement, but on the other hand, we are a little disappointed, because we were waiting for more concrete actions, such as moving the bus stop

”.

The principal underlined on this occasion "

the calm and the feeling of security

" which reigns within the establishment, recalls for his part Mohamed Chihi.

"

The students are safe in the school, the real problem is what is happening around

", however insists the spokesperson for the FCPE.

It is a high school of excellence where there is a real social mix, with, on the one hand, students of which La Martinière is the sector high school, and, on the other, students who come from more neighborhoods. favored with parents from a rather wealthy socio-professional category.

But, with what is happening, I fear that some parents will withdraw their children from the establishment, which would be regrettable, because we would lose this diversity

”.

Following the latest violence, the rectorate of Lyon announced in a press release that classes were suspended this Friday, March 5.

The establishment was closed "

for the day, to allow time for discussion with the teams

".

The rector Olivier Dugrip also condemned "

with firmness the facts which took place and which endangered the safety of students and staff

".
