S-Bahn Munich with a mammoth project: The superlative bridge is ready - now the steel colossus has to be moved

Many passengers between Laim and Hirschgarten have been able to watch live over the past few months as a large railway bridge is welded together piece by piece.

Now the bridge is finished - pushing it into the correct position is the highest level of engineering.

Munich - 90 meters span, 1,300 tons weight, up to 16 meters high - between Hirschgarten and Laim, the Upper Palatinate construction company Max Bögl has built a superlative bridge on behalf of the railway in recent months.

The two tracks of the second S-Bahn main line will later run over the colossus made of steel - and the so-called tied-arch construction is one of the reasons why the railway will use the existing S-Bahn main line for a total of 18 weekends this year partially locks.

This will be the case for the first time this Friday evening.

Even if the tied arch bridge, which can be clearly seen from the west end of the Hirschgarten platform, is still covered with plastic sheeting, it is about to be finalized.

“We are on schedule,” says Anke Hering, Deutsche Bahn site manager for the western section of the second trunk line.

"Except for a few cross members, the bridge is finished."

Munich: The bridge will be pushed over in July

But now it's getting complicated.

The railway is preparing to push the bridge "in one go" (Hering) west over the tracks of the Südring to its final position.

From July 17th, this will be done on several days with the help of hydraulic presses.

To do this, however, it is necessary to install auxiliary supports between the tracks of the south ring below so that the bridge does not fall into the void when it is pushed over.

The supports, in turn, require massive concrete foundations.

However, they cannot be poured until the underground power and signal cables have been removed and relocated to other locations.

It is a set of gears that interlocks and makes it necessary to set the exact hour: Who does what when?

When the bridge is finally docked - probably around July 22nd - on the other side at the upper edge of the overpass structure, the auxiliary supports have to be removed and the foundations removed.

Munich: Renovation of the Laim train station in full swing

Anke Hering directs a team of eight civil engineers for the planning of the second main line in the west.

They are not only taking care of the bridge, but also of the renovation of the Laim train station, which should come a long way this year.

Final destination: Track 1, on which the S-Bahns * travel out of town, is being built about 30 meters to the north.

The foundations for the track and the platform are currently being poured.

The stairs for the passengers are already visible.

From next year, the trains going out of town are to stop on the new track 1 - the old track 1 will be closed and will give way to the completely new building of the station.

Civil engineer Anke Hering says: “I'm proud of my team.” And the more she talks about the details, the more you can guess why.
