A medical team at the diligent Damascus Hospital General Authority succeeded in performing a qualitative surgery “complete laryngectomy with selective bilateral neck scraping in addition to esophageal fabrication” through lumbar anesthesia for a 61-year-old patient.
The specialist and head of the ear division at the hospital, Dr. Razan Al-Jasem, explained in a statement to the delegate of Sana that the success and quality of the operation is due to the use of lumbar anesthesia for the neck due to the risk of general anesthesia on the patient’s life due to the presence of a history of moderate-severity pulmonary emphysema with second-degree prickly cell laryngeal cancer of the glottis and supraglottis.
Dr. Al-Jasem pointed out that, after conducting investigations and medical consultations, "epidural cervical anesthesia with local cervical blockade" was chosen instead of general anesthesia, and the case was studied at length and the possibility of conducting it under local anesthesia with leaving the patient before entering the operations in order not to move during the procedure that was performed. It ended in a record time of less than four hours, indicating that the operation that was performed last Tuesday was successful with excellent results, and the patient is still under medical observation and is in good general condition and is gradually recovering.
Dr. Al-Jasem said: “According to the follow-up to this type of operation, it can be said that it is the first time at the level of Syria that this operation is performed under the influence of lumbar anesthesia in the epidural region through the cervical vertebrae for a period of four hours .. Dr. Al-Jasem explained that the choice of lumbar cervical anesthesia was made for dozens of operations, but it was limited to surgeries that take a short time, such as thyroidectomy and vomiting laryngeal surgery.
