The Educational Affairs Committee of the Legislative Council held a meeting today (5th) to discuss the renaming of the Open University of Hong Kong. The new names in Chinese and English are "Hong Kong Metropolitan University" and "Hong Kong Metropolitan University".
The meeting was finally passed and the relevant bill was submitted to the Legislative Council for deliberation in the first half of this year.

Guan Qingping, the academic vice president of the Open University of Hong Kong, said that the term “open” often made other universities and high schools mistakenly believe that the school only limited distance courses and refused to cooperate. Misunderstanding that distance courses are offered and refused; many students also reported that when traveling to foreign countries, because the school name has the word "open", it is not recognized as a full-time student ID and cannot purchase student tickets.
Guan Qingping said that the university has not given up on distance positioning, but the university mainly provides full-time courses during the day and night, and offers distance courses in the evening and Saturday and day.
Regardless of Hong Kong's OUHK and OUHK-Zhaoqing branch, courses will complement other local universities and universities in the Greater Bay Area.

Alumni can get a new school name certificate
As for previous graduates, Guan said that they can all receive a certificate for the new school name.
He also gave an example: "Many prestigious universities in the United States used to be women's universities. In the 1960s and 1970s, they began to accept both boys, and (the name of the school) would give up the word for women."
He continued that if the OUHK only deletes the word "open", it will collide with another local university. Therefore, he chose the most appropriate name that can represent the OUHK and Hong Kong as the new school name.
