Joe Biden wants to have the situation of unaccompanied minor migrants on the American-Mexican border examined.
The US president asked senior members of his team to travel to the border region, said Vedant Patel, a White House spokesman.
Employees are tasked with preparing a comprehensive briefing on the government's response to the influx of unaccompanied minors for Biden.
They should also "give an assessment of additional steps that can be taken to ensure the safety and care of these children." According to Patel, the time of the visit remains a secret for security reasons.
Democrats and activists had previously criticized the government for detaining unaccompanied children and families for too long while their asylum applications were being examined.
Republicans and anti-immigration officials, on the other hand, fear that granting immigration prematurely could increase the influx of migrants from Central America.
The US government told Reuters news agency that border guards stopped more than 4,500 migrants crossing the border on Wednesday.
Observers assume that the number of illegal entries will continue to rise in the coming weeks.
