The U.S. Senate last night (Saturday) approved a proposal to provide a weekly federal unemployment benefit of $ 300 a week to U.S. citizens left unemployed due to the Corona crisis.

This, after the debate on the issue was delayed in the Senate for hours, after one of the Democratic senators demanded to reduce the amount awarded.

The proposal passed with a majority of 50 supporters against 49 opponents.

The Senate, which has a Democratic majority on Cole's tip thanks to Vice President Camela Harris' authority to vote in it, wanted to give the unemployed higher unemployment benefits, at $ 400 a week.

This is as part of President Joe Biden's $ 1.9 trillion financial aid program designed to help deal with the damage of the corona plague.

But discussions on the issue were delayed for hours after one of the senators, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of southern Virginia, demanded a reduction in the amount of unemployment benefits, fearing that too generous an amount would prevent citizens' desire to return to work, thus delaying economic recovery.

The Democrats, after the president's intervention, finally agreed to reduce the amount of unemployment benefits by $ 100 a week, at the request of Manchin and other officials.

It was also agreed that the sums would be given to the unemployed until September 6, instead of until early October, as the Democrats initially wanted.

The difficulties in passing the bill provide a possible glimpse into the future of the robe Senate, where Democrats will not be able to afford to miss a single vote.

"The president supports the compromise agreement, and he is grateful to all the senators who have worked so hard to achieve this result," said White House spokeswoman Jen Saki.

Following the changes made to the sections of the economic aid plan, she will now have to return to the House of Representatives for a vote next week, and only after it is approved will Biden be able to sign it and approve it once and for all.

The president unveiled the aid program in January to end what he said was a "crisis of deep human suffering" through accelerating vaccines and injecting financial aid into citizens struggling with the long-running economic crisis caused by the plague.

Among the goals Biden set in the program, known as the "American Rescue Program," is the implementation of about 100 million vaccines by the turn of the century for his administration, and the reopening of most schools by spring.

At the same time, the program provides another round of financial assistance.
