Early this morning (6th), a deadly fire broke out in the Po Cheung Building in Yau Ma Tei, resulting in 1 death and 11 injuries. Among them, the deceased was found to have fallen dead at the gate of the "panel cubicle".

The District Crime Squad of Yau Tsim Police took over the follow-up and classified the case as arson.

Some district board members visited the fire site today to find out about the situation and pointed out that the burning unit was separated by simple hoardings and seven people were sub-leased. The internal environment was very crowded and bad, and the deceased was one of the tenants.

The building in question was occupied in 1964. The building is about 57 years old. It is an old building in the district. However, the corporation has not received the "Fire Safety Improvement Instructions" issued by the Fire Services Department. Larynx system".

Lin Jianwen quoted from the chairman of the corporation, saying that the fire floor was the first floor of the building, and there were 7 beds in the fire unit, separated by simple fences, and sub-leased to 7 locals. The internal environment of the unit was very crowded. And bad.

The deceased in the fire was one of the residents in the unit.

Lin Jianwen pointed out that the building involved was similar to the fire that killed Canton Road in Yau Ma Tei in November last year. They were all old-style tenement buildings.

In addition, the OC has not received the "Instructions for Improving Fire Safety" issued by the Fire Services Department in the past years. Therefore, the fire-fighting facilities in the building are not complete. There is only a "dry hose system" and no fire alarm and other equipment.

Lin Jianwen explained that many tenements in Yau Ma area are facing relative situations. Even if some buildings received instructions, due to various factors, they failed to comply with the instructions for 10 years.

Lin Jianwen continued that there are about 40 households in the building involved, and there are units on each floor for sub-divided rentals. Therefore, the residents of the building are mostly tenants, and about 10 to 20% of South Asians.

After the fire broke out, the Yau Tsim Mong District Office has opened the first and third floors of Henry Leong Yau Ma Tei Community Centre for the affected citizens to take shelter. Lin Jian-man said that there are currently about 30 to 40 residents living temporarily and their emotions are quite stable.
