Now it's official: the organizers of the Nuremberg folk festivals have to cancel this year's spring festival due to the corona pandemic.

Nuremberg - The second largest folk festival in Bavaria takes place annually in April and September in Nuremberg * at the Dutzendteich.

Around two million visitors are enthusiastic about the many attractions every year.

Whether ferris wheel, roller coasters or ice cream and sugar confectionery - there is something for everyone.

Now it's official: Unfortunately, the Spring Festival cannot take place this year due to the current corona pandemic.

The organizers of the festival announced this today.

Unfortunately, the current corona numbers did not allow an event of this size.

The Nuremberg folk festivals - a tradition since 1826

The first Nuremberg folk festival was celebrated by the citizens in the autumn of 1826, according to the Nuremberg city portal.

They honored the newly crowned King Ludwig I, who celebrated his birthday and name day.

At that time, the festival took place elsewhere - on the Peterheide in Gleißhammer.

In the following years the festival changed its location several times.

Sometimes it took place on today's grounds of the city park, sometimes on the Plärrer or on Fürther Straße.

The festival at the Dutzendteich has only been celebrated since 1953.

The spring folk festival took place for the first time in 1919 as the “Easter show fair”.

The attractions were also completely different in the 19th century.

For example, there were sack and egg runs, horse and deer races or tree climbing.

All of that has been replaced by larger rides over the years.

Only one tradition remains to this day that people still look forward to - the fireworks.

A small consolation for all folk festival fans: According to the current status, the autumn folk festival can take place as usual at the end of August - hopefully with fireworks too.
