Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned Ethiopia yesterday (Saturday) of continuing to fill the dam it is building on the Nile, during his first visit to Sudan since the overthrow of dictator Omar al-Bashir about two years ago.

Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia have been holding talks for nearly a decade on filling and operating the Great Ethiopian Revival Dam, whose construction on the Blue Nile began in 2011.

Egypt sees it as a threat to its water supply, and Sudan fears the dams will not be damaged if Ethiopia continues to fill the dam before the three countries reach an agreement.

"We oppose the policy of forcing facts on the ground and expanding control of the Blue Nile through unilateral measures, without taking into account the interests of Sudan and Egypt," Sisi said in a statement broadcast by Sudanese official television, alongside state leader Abd al-Fatah al-Burhan .

Ethiopia, which last year completed the first phase of filling the dam, has announced that it will move towards the completion of the second phase even without an agreement.

The Egyptian president said he and his Sudanese counterpart had agreed to resume negotiations mediated by the African Union, the United Nations, the European Union and the United States, in order to reach an agreement before the flood season.

The Egyptian president's visit to neighboring Sudan came amid efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries during the military crisis between Sudan and Ethiopia, and Cairo hinted at its support for the border dispute between Khartoum and Addis Ababa.

In recent months, there have been several clashes in the al-Fassaka border district.

Ethiopian farmers cultivate their land in this area, which Sudan claims belongs to it.

"Sudan's recent steps to establish sovereignty on its eastern border with Ethiopia are in line with international border agreements," the Egyptian presidential office said after al-Sisi's visit, during which he also met with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamduk.

Last week, the Egyptian army and the Sudanese army signed an agreement on military cooperation.
