Nuremberg is hard hit by the financial consequences of the corona pandemic.

Last year sales losses were mainly due to a lack of tourism.

Nuremberg - In the second largest city in Bavaria, the number of overnight stays fell by 57.8 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year - according to a press release from the city of Nuremberg.

As recently as 2019, the Franconian metropolis * recorded 3.5 million overnight stays.

Last year it was only around 1.5 million.

Nuremberg's economic advisor Michael Fraas says: "Corona * has hit Nuremberg in all its force as a strong business travel, trade fair and congress destination and has almost brought the economic motor tourism to a standstill." And that has serious consequences.

The loss of sales can be put at around 819 million euros from March to December last year - 436.5 million euros due to a lack of overnight tourism, 382.5 million euros due to a lack of day tourism.

A total of 18.7 million euros in losses per week.

"After the lockdown, we have to do everything we can to get the economic motor of tourism up and running again," says Fraas.

The number of guest arrivals decreased by almost 60 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Instead of 2 million, only around 808,000 people traveled to Nuremberg.

"As a result of the travel restrictions, international overnight stays were 68.4 percent lower than in the previous year."

Nuremberg: Tourism responsible for the livelihood of 33,000 inhabitants - a risk of decline

A press spokesman for the city of Nuremberg emphasizes: “As a cross-sectional sector, tourism has an impact on many other sectors.

There is hardly any economic sector that does not benefit from tourism and is therefore currently suffering from the elimination of tourist travel, be it the hospitality industry, retail trade, service providers or suppliers. ”These include many regional producers and craft businesses.

According to a study, tourism generated sales of 2.1 billion euros for the catering, retail and service sectors in Nuremberg in 2019.

The hospitality industry benefited from this with 41.3 percent, retail with 39.5 percent and other services with 19.2 percent.

In 2019, this provided income of just under a billion euros and theoretically represents almost 33,000 people who can make a living from tourism.

In view of the great challenges, Fraas emphasizes: "The city of Nuremberg is in a crisis with the tourism industry." The Nuremberg Congress and Tourism Office is therefore receiving a large grant.

Above all, the city also stands by its share in the tourism fund.

Tourism in Nuremberg should get going with fresh ideas - "Living in our city"

As a solution, "the Congress and Tourism Office has developed campaigns for Nuremberg as a tourist destination." The restaurateurs are being helped in a pragmatic way by exempting them from special usage fees and expanding free bar areas in public spaces.

“That will bring life back to our city,” the economic advisor hopes.

As soon as the infection rate of the pandemic * allows, opportunities for recovery are seen in the conference segment with up to 100 participants and in national tourism.

Looking to the future, Fraas says: “Now it is important to develop and present Nuremberg as a lively city and attractive tourist destination.” The best example of fresh ideas is the Nuremberg City Workshop.

"Here, the city and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, together with numerous inner-city players from trade, the hotel industry, gastronomy, culture and city administration, are breaking new ground in order to set impulses for Nuremberg."
