This is a drop of two points in one week and also the lowest level reached in a year by the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) of the Chancellor and her Bavarian Christian-social ally CSU, according to this survey for the daily Bild.

The German conservatives had reached almost 40% of voting intentions at their highest during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, at a time when Germany was a good student in Europe in the face of Covid-19.

Two movements very critical of the restrictions still imposed on the population in the face of the pandemic are taking advantage: the far right of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) which reaches 10% and the liberal FDP party, at 9%, according to the poll .

This is bad news for the Chancellor a week away from two regional elections which will be a test in Germany, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, but especially in view of the general elections at the end of September.

The score of 32.9% reached in the previous national election in 2017 by the two allied parties CDU / CSU had already been considered a poor performance, even though Angela Merkel had been re-elected for a fourth and final term in the chancellery.

His government is now under fire from criticism due to the slowness of the vaccination campaign, failures in the distribution of Covid tests to the population and public weariness in the face of restrictions.
