Freising

- fill up front gardens with crushed stone and gravel?

A trend that is also becoming increasingly popular in the cathedral city.

In the meeting of the building committee, the Free Voters parliamentary group applied for a ban on this type of garden design in new buildings and conversions.

With a view to climate change, green spaces in gardens are becoming increasingly important, said Benno Zierer.

Stones heat up strongly on hot days

Graveled front gardens had a negative effect on species protection and diversity.

In addition, the stones would heat up strongly on hot days, explained city architect Barbara Schelle.

The heat would only be released slowly and would remain at a high level even at night.

But introduce a greening obligation right away?

The committee did not see this need.

Rather rely on advice, education and information.

That was the tenor of the discussion that followed.

Charlotte Reitsam (Greens) suggested the design of the areas to be included in the parking space and open space design statutes, which are currently being updated.

“Offering constructive advice,” added Manfred Drobny (Greens).

Monika Schwind (FSM) and Rudolf Schwaiger (CSU) wanted to move away from the “culture of prohibition” towards a “dominant culture”.

Practical biodiversity concept for the cathedral city

The city of Freising takes the social responsibility for the preservation of biodiversity very seriously, emphasized Schelle.

The topic was taken up at the Freising Environment Days 2019.

In addition, at the suggestion of the Greens, a practical biodiversity concept is currently being developed for the cathedral city.

The committee approved the proposal for a resolution to commission the city administration to incorporate the intention of the application into this biodiversity concept and to examine and, if necessary, integrate it when updating the parking lot and open space design statutes.
