In light of the growing demand for energy in its various forms, the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment has been keen to shift towards the use of renewable energies to generate electric power and to implement various projects in different sectors in the governorates.

The Director of Environmental Safety at the Ministry, Eng. Ruwaida An-Nahar, confirmed to SANA that more than 7,000 solar-powered lighting devices have been installed to light the main streets in the governorates of Rural Damascus, Aleppo, Latakia, Tartous, Hama, Homs, Daraa, Hasaka and Deir Ezzor, in addition to the countryside of Raqqa, and work is underway to install 16,000 devices in the governorates. During the current year.

An-Nahar said that the ministry is currently working on implementing projects to generate electricity with solar energy in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity, including a project in Hassia with a capacity of 10 megawatts, and it is also working to provide 13 citizen service centers with photoelectric systems to ensure the continuity of their work.

According to the day, the Ministry implemented projects to pump collective wells with solar energy in Maaloula for about 700 dunums of agriculture owned by about 600 farmers, and a project for pumping water from the village of Al Hamira agricultural well in Al Nabek area was implemented and irrigated about 4000 dunums of agriculture belonging to 159 farmers, and the implementation of the project for pumping water from a village well was completed. Agricultural Hala, powered by solar energy, irrigates 110 hectares of agricultural land expropriated by 208 farmers.

In Sahnaya in the countryside of Damascus, the implementation of the project of pumping agricultural water well with solar energy has been completed, and it is the only one in the region. It belongs to about 500 farmers and a project to pump water from a well in Ein Al-Tineh Agricultural, which serves about 2,200 agricultural dunums.

And in the city of An-Nabek, a solar-powered water pumping project was implemented that serves 3,300 dunums of agricultural land, and a similar project in the Kafron area of ​​Tartous governorate serves about 240 dunums and benefits about 1,500 farmers.

An-Nahar revealed that there is a plan to implement 100 projects to pump water for wells in more than one governorate, including agricultural and collective wells and pumping stations, which will be completed this year, irrigating thousands of agricultural hectares.

In the same context, the Environmental Safety Director indicated the implementation of a project to generate electricity with solar energy on the roofs of shelters and social affairs centers for the purpose of lighting in the governorates of Damascus, Tartous and Quneitra, the installed capacity of which is estimated at 37 kilowatts per year and the implementation of the specialized training program for specialized engineers in the governorates, where the number of beneficiaries reached 200 engineers. .

Al-Nahar pointed to the completion of the preparation of technical and financial studies to generate electricity with solar energy on the roofs of the citizen service center buildings in the governorates, which amount to 40 centers, and work is currently underway to prepare the necessary financing and start implementation.

The Ministry is also currently working on implementing the solar street lighting project in the Syrian governorates.
