In addition to cutting fruit trees * and scarifying, composting is one of the most important tasks in your own garden.

More and more amateur gardeners are asking themselves: “How do I compost correctly?” Those who compost correctly receive valuable fertilizer for their garden.

In the spring in particular, the ripe compost is used in the garden to optimally prepare the bed.

Even during the growth phase, plants enjoy the compost again and again, which can rightly be described as the gardener's black gold.

The valuable humus soil is created as early as the sixth month.

In this article, we'll tell you what to look out for when composting.

In addition, we will introduce you to some composters and show you what to consider when buying.

Composting: This is what you should look out for when buying a composter

  • Capacity:

The size of the composter is best made dependent on the compostable waste that you generate.

The more waste, the bigger the composter should be.

For a three-person household with a small garden, models with a capacity of 300 to 600 liters are perfectly adequate.

The amount of waste does not only vary based on the number of people living in the household.

    Diet plays an essential role.

Frequent consumption of vegetables and fruit produces more compost than eating ready-made products or freshly cooked meals.

  • Different types of composters:

When it comes to composters, a distinction is not only made between open and closed composters.

While the open composter is the classic type with a wooden border, there are two versions of the closed models: quick and thermal composter.

These are mostly made of plastic, so they are less noticeable and better at holding back odors.

Composting is accelerated by the closed construction.

The only difference between fast and thermal composters is the insulation, which means that the temperature is a little higher.

  • Equipment:

There are still differences in the construction, shape and equipment of the closed composters.

Some have two lids, others lift themselves through an adjustable vent and other composters can be used both in summer and in winter.

Compost correctly: With these tips it is guaranteed to succeed

  • Place the composter correctly!

In order to achieve an ideal composting process, it is best to place the composter in partial shade.

The compost needs soil as a subsoil, this is the only way earthworms and other small organisms can penetrate.

  • Pay attention to the right waste!

Plant and kitchen waste that is not contaminated with harmful substances is suitable as compost: vegetable and fruit scraps, lawns, smaller branches, withered plants, coffee and tea filters and eggshells.

  • Shred the material before composting!

Before throwing the garbage on the compost, be sure to shred it.

The better the material is shredded before composting, the better it can rot.

A chopper is very suitable for wood waste.

  • It's all in the mix!

The compost should contain a balanced mixture of wet, green material and dry, woody material.

This is the only way to ensure a good supply of nutrients to the microorganisms that are responsible for rotting.

  • Only moist compost is good compost!

When composting, you should ensure optimal moisture.

Living things like earthworms need moisture to be active.

However, the compost must not be too moist, otherwise there will be a lack of air and the waste will start to rot.

As a rule of thumb, the compost should only be as wet as a squeezed sponge.

  • Turn compost regularly!

The compost should be turned over once or twice a year.

This is the only way to ensure that all waste receives the correct amount of oxygen.

External waste gets inside and vice versa when it is re-mixed.

The first transfer should take place in the spring.
