The mega-traffic project Auerberg tunnel is significantly more expensive than once assumed.

Preparations for the four-lane expansion of the B2 between Eschenlohe and Oberau Nord have already started.

It is not clear when the tunnel itself is created.

  • Eleven years ago the Auerberg tunnel was supposed to cost 102 million euros - now the investment has increased to almost 170 million euros.

  • The four-lane expansion of the B2 between Eschenlohe and Oberau Nord is intended to remove the bottleneck at the end of the motorway and relieve traffic.

  • It is not yet clear when the tunnel construction will start - various discussions are currently underway with authorities and ministries.

Eschenlohe

- As early as 2010, the cost calculations for the Auerberg tunnel construction project had reached dizzying heights.

At the time, experts assumed a total investment of 102 million euros.

Today the planners wouldn't get very far with it.

Last fall, people had long been talking about 140 million - and were just about to update the costs again.

Latest status: the Auerberg tunnel between Eschenlohe and Oberau Nord is worth almost 170 million euros.

This is the number given by the press office of the southern Bavarian branch of the Autobahn GmbH of the federal government.

Auerberg tunnel significantly more expensive - there are two main reasons for this

What happened?

First of all, nothing out of the ordinary.

On the one hand, there were building price increases, on the other hand, people are smarter today than eleven years ago - there is experience: knowledge that emerged during the construction of the Oberau tunnel.

There, considerable amounts of naturally contaminated excavated material had to be disposed of at great expense.

The highly toxic thallium had caused the additional effort (we reported).

Eschenlohe: It has not yet been determined when the tunnel itself will be built

Now the next mega-project in the district is approaching, which should bring the urgently needed traffic relief.

Preparatory work is in progress.

Weeks ago, workers began to clear areas in the area of the future north portal.

At some point, “rock material from what will later be the south portal area will be built in there,” explains press spokesman Josef Seebacher.

The further schedule remains in the dark.

Since various discussions with authorities and ministries are currently in progress, “no statements can currently be made about the start of construction and the progress of the tunnel construction,” says Seebacher.

But he makes it clear: "The technical and planning preparations by our Munich-Maisach branch are in full swing regardless of the coordination."

New Eschenloh tunnel: 170 million euro project to remove the bottleneck at the end of the A95

The 3.8 kilometer four-lane expansion of the B2 between Eschenlohe and Oberau Nord is intended to remove the bottleneck at the end of the autobahn, where traffic regularly jams.

The package contains the 1.9-kilometer-long Auerberg tunnel and, as the first of two construction phases, a semi-junction of the A95 at Gut Weghaus - a double-sided, S-shaped construction with which you can only exit from one direction and only in one direction Highway arrives - including accompanying roads.

This will make it possible to close the ailing Eschenloh B2 tunnels.

This means relief for Eschenlohe, as the traffic flowing south from Murnau is directed to the A95 at an early stage.

The planners are planning a state road between Eschenlohe and the current end of the motorway, which will run parallel to the A95, as a replacement connection for traffic that is not allowed to use trunk roads.

A95: Half connection at Weghaus should be ready by the end of the year

According to Seebacher, the Weghaus half-connection is being built as a pure motorway project - independent of the Auerberg tunnel.

Preparations started last October.

“We will start at the beginning of June and finish the work by the end of the year.” The costs “including land acquisition and nature conservation compensation areas are around two million euros,” says the spokesman for the authorities.

Ailing Eschenloh B2 tunnels will have to hold out until the end of 2022

Clearing was also carried out for the future connection of the new state road - at the end of the motorway.

Further felling work is currently planned in the area of the southern tunnel portal.

In addition, the division is being relocated for the new state road along the motorway in the Eschenlohe section to the end of the motorway.

This means that various lines will be relocated from the construction site area.

So the ailing Eschenloh tunnels still have to hold out a little - even if the Weghaus junction is ready by the end of 2021.

The tubes, steeped in history, cannot be closed until the traffic flows on the new state road at the earliest.

At Autobahn GmbH, it is assumed that this is likely to be the case "probably at the end of 2022".
