All over the world, women have taken to the streets to fight for their rights for a century.

In Nuremberg *, too, two alliances organized an action week with various events.

Over 1000 people took part in the demonstration across Nuremberg.

Today, Monday (March 8th) - International Women's Day - there is a special “Actionwalk” at 5 pm.

From March 1st to March 8th, the March 8th Alliance and the FLINT * Committee in Nuremberg are holding various campaigns around Women's Day.

The organizers report on today's “Actionwalk” Facebook page that this is only for FLINTA * s.

That means for women, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans and agender people.

During the demonstration on Monday, “we will jointly and selectively go to various stations that we will fill with feminist content,” said Lissi Schwemmer, from the Nuremberg Alliance March 8, in an interview with

.

One would, for example, visit the Imedana ev, where refugee women talk about the reality of their lives.

Another station revolves around the right to physical self-determination, as well as the topic of abortion.

The “Actionwalk” starts at 5 pm in the archive park.

100 years of women's day - equality for all genders

The first Women's Day, also known as Women's Fighting Day, took place on March 19, 1911.

At that time, the participants demanded, among other things, the right to vote for women, equal pay and maternity protection.

The city portal Nuremberg reports that in Germany alone, more than a million women took to the streets for their rights that day.

Women also demonstrated for equality in Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and the USA.

In the following years, more and more countries followed the movement.

In the later GDR the day was even made an official holiday, but in the Federal Republic it was more and more forgotten.

In 2019, Berlin was the only federal state to declare International Women's Day a public holiday.

This year's overarching UN motto for International Women's Day 2021 is "Women in leadership positions: For an equal future in a COVID-19 world".

The topic celebrates the enormous efforts of girls and women around the world to create an equal future and recover from the corona pandemic, according to the official UN Women website.
