The official registration period has begun, and the hobby gardeners of the Starnberger Land solidarity community are already running down the doors: More than 450 have already applied for the Sonnenäcker in the district.

This year there is also something new on offer.

District

- In times of a pandemic, people are driven out into nature.

If you can then sow and harvest vegetables and flowers with your own hands, happiness seems perfect.

"We already had a special permit for our sun fields for the 2020 pandemic," reports Jana Schmaderer from the Starnberger Land community, which started the project in 2003 with 22 tenants in Gilching.

Ecological reasons and the desire for regional products do the rest: “More and more people attach importance to regionality and want to grow their own vegetables.

It's trendy, ”says Schmaderer.

Hobby gardeners can now grow their own vegetables and plant flowers on leased land at nine locations in Gilching, Gauting, Krailling, Pöcking, Herrsching, Oberpfaffenhofen and Andechs / Erling.

There were 300 gardeners last year, this year there will be many more.

“We haven't advertised at all, but we already have 450 registrations,” reveals Schmaderer.

It now assumes up to 500 tenants.

There is already a waiting list for the field in Pöcking, it is full.

"The farmers are already looking at where they can find corners and add," says Schmaderer.

In Andechs, for example, there is still a lot of space.

"We could probably offer a lot more fields if we had the area for it."

The area is already impressive: the farmers are providing around 18,000 square meters for the Sonnenäcker.

When the potatoes are planted, around mid-April, they prepare the soil for the new tenants to be ready for sowing.

The hobby gardeners can then look forward to 100-meter-long potato dams, so-called bi-catches, on which they can let off steam.

The only requirement: You must not use any mineral fertilizers or chemical pesticides.

The growing season runs from late April to late October.

The tenants pay 66 euros per bifang, around 80 square meters.

If you prefer to plow less area, you can also lease half a bifang.

All age groups can be found among the tenants, from kindergarten children to senior citizens.

Most of them come from the district.

“They live in the localities here,” says Schmaderer.

Strangers from Munich or other districts are more the exception.

"You either have a family here or you work in the district and drive to your field on your way to work."

New this year is a course offered by the solidarity community on the Sonnenacker in Erling.

“The 1x1 of gardening in the field, together through the year of cultivation” is the name of the offer.

Once a month, a professional is available to provide hobby gardeners with advice and practical help.

“It's about questions like how to fertilize, how to fight pests, when is the best time to harvest and the like,” explains Schmaderer, who herself lives in Erling and will be the contact person there.

The course is part of the cooperation project “Simply garden yourself”, which the “Diversity Makers” offer together with the “Guest Guides Garden Experience Bavaria”.

It starts on March 23rd.

The registration deadline for the course is March 15th.

Why is the course only available in Erling?

“This is a pilot project, so to speak.

We'll try it out.

And if it is well received, we will do the same at other locations, ”says Schmaderer.

The Starnberger Land solidarity community would also like to take kindergarten and school groups back on board.

“You don't pay any rent,” says Schmaderer.

In the community of Andechs, for example, they are talking to the Catholic kindergarten.

"Of course we support that and we look forward to it when it works."

Hobby gardeners can now apply for the Sonnenäcker.

The documents for this can be found on the website www.unserland.info.

For those of you who are brand new, there will be an information evening via Zoom on Wednesday, March 31.

Registration closes on April 6th.

Inquiries are answered by email to sonnenacker.starnberg@gmail.com or jana.schmaderer@starnbergerland.info.

The handover of the fields depends on the weather and is therefore announced at short notice.

It usually takes place in mid to late April.

the current dates can also be found on the Starnberger Land website.
