The renovation work in Schlehdorf Abbey is progressing.

Next, the new owner, Wogeno München, would like to convert the north-western area of the complex.

The forecourt is also to be redesigned.

Schlehdorf

- At the end of 2019, the Munich housing association (Wogeno) acquired the monastery from the Dominican Missionaries.

Since then, renovation work has been going on to create a mix of living and working spaces in the large building complex.

Areas for public events and educational work are also being created.

Since the takeover by Wogeno, the project has been called "Cohaus Kloster Schlehdorf".

The renovation work is divided into two construction phases.

As Johannes Hochholzer explained at the latest Schlehdorf municipal council meeting, construction phase one in the east wing is now nearing completion.

The house manager expects its completion in April of this year.

About 99 percent of the living space created here has already been rented, said Hochholzer when asked.

There are currently around six free commercial spaces.

A new residential cluster with seven units

In their meeting, the municipal councils now had to deal with the building application for the second construction phase.

According to Hochholzer, it encompasses the north-western area of the monastery - specifically the part of the building between the prelate staircase and the secondary school.

Among other things, the former hospital ward of the Dominican Missionaries is located here on the second floor.

As Hochholzer explained to the local council, a so-called residential cluster should be created here: This cluster should consist of seven individual small apartments with bathrooms and common rooms.

A barrier-free conversion is planned.

There are already some interested parties for the new apartments, said Hochholzer.

The large kitchen on the ground floor is being prepared.

The refectory is to be converted into a modern lounge and dining room.

The former sister chapel on the first floor, which will be used by the parish until the parish church is completed, will be preserved and should continue to be available for church purposes, the head of the house assured.

A cluster apartment consisting of eight individual apartments already exists on the top floor of this part of the building.

“It stays as it is,” said Hochholzer.

The municipal council unanimously gave its consent to the building application.

Hochholzer assumes that the construction work for this can begin next year.

He did not want to comment on the costs.

Easter market should continue to take place

At the meeting, Hochholzer also explained the plans to redesign the cloister forecourt.

He emphasized: "It should remain a public square." However, the tarred areas were to be reduced and the area more inviting and more ecological in order to create a central meeting point for residents, churchgoers and seminar participants alike.

The draft that Hochholzer presented at the meeting provides for, among other things, the relocation of parking spaces or the creation of two elliptical green areas - a "butterfly meadow" and a lawn.

In addition, various seating options are to be created.

When Werner Mest asked whether the traditional Easter market could still take place on the forecourt in the future, Hochholzer answered with a clear yes.

"We have also offered to act as the organizer," said Hochholzer, who also pointed out that the area must not be built on for reasons of monument protection.

The church users should continue to use the Wogeno parking spaces, says Hochholzer.

But he also emphasized that the housing association was not responsible for enabling church visitors with walking disabilities to park close to the church.

The church must prove its parking spaces itself.

In order to calm the traffic in the approach area up to the parish church and the cloister forecourt, Hochholzer suggested, among other things, that grooves be milled in the asphalt below the secondary school entrance on the parish and that the driveway be narrowed.

The Wogeno would pay for it - a proposal that the councils agreed with.

According to Hochholzer, the cost of redesigning the forecourt will cost around 60,000 euros.

Since the project is redesigning a public square at the expense of the owner (i.e. the Wogeno), it is hoped that the community will participate.

“That would be a nice signal.” Mayor Stefan Jocher was ready to talk.

Congregation-owned areas are also affected by the redesign, said Jocher.

Parish church is no longer illuminated at night

Incidentally, even after the renovation has been completed, the parish church will no longer be illuminated from a long distance at night using floodlights.

This is no longer possible, says Hochholzer, because the glaring light would massively disrupt the residents of the newly created apartments.

The councils understood this.
