Fewer break-ins, fights, drug offenses: In the corona year, crime in Bavaria fell significantly.

For this, criminals caused millions of dollars in damage over the Internet.

And the officials had their hands full with enforcing the Corona rules.

Munich

- A number in the Bavarian crime statistics has been reliable in recent years.

With the beginning of the dark season, the burglars were on their way again.

From the end of October, the police began receiving more and more cases of home burglaries.

But in the corona year 2020 nothing was as usual.

With home office and curfew, many people forcibly spent most of the day at home.

“That scared off the burglars,” says Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU).

The result: The winter forays largely failed to materialize.

And the number of burglaries in Bavaria fell by almost four percent.

In general, the number of criminal offenses per 100,000 inhabitants fell in the past year.

Herrmann speaks of the lowest level in 41 years.

In absolute numbers, criminal offenses in Bavaria fell from 603 464 in 2019 to 594 243.

The corona effect was not only noticeable in the break-ins, the statistics also show a clear minus in the case of physical injuries (night curfew), shoplifting (shops closed) and drug offenses (consumption probably more private).

But there are also areas in which crime has increased significantly in the Corona year.

Cyber crime, that is, crimes committed over the Internet, has shot up by 20 percent.

The resulting damage rose by almost ten million euros to 28.8 million.

For Herrmann, fighting online crime is one of the greatest challenges for the years to come.

A EUR 300,000 mobile IT forensics laboratory housed in a van, which will be used as a pilot project in Upper Franconia, is to help.

Devices for digital evidence preservation, the corresponding software and workplaces are bundled in the vehicle.

Herrmann reported a further increase in crimes against sexual self-determination (plus 23.7 percent).

The Minister of the Interior attributes the strong increase primarily to cases of the dissemination of pornographic content, which is sent, for example, via WhatsApp.

A prevention campaign is to be started here to raise awareness among pupils, parents and teachers.

And then there are corona measures.

The police have recorded a total of more than three million checks since the exit restrictions began.

The mask requirement was violated most frequently in October and November, when in many municipalities mouth and nose protection had to be worn in public areas.

Overall, the increase in corona rule violations in the first lockdown was higher than in winter.

Also interesting: three quarters of all corona violations were committed by men.

In terms of domestic violence, the increase feared by the pandemic has not yet been reflected in the statistics, emphasized Herrmann.

While federal states such as North Rhine-Westphalia or Brandenburg recorded a significant increase, the number of cases in Bavaria remained almost at the previous year's level (plus 0.4 percent).

However, experts warn of a high number of unreported cases, especially since the advice centers recorded more inquiries during the lockdown.

When looking at the perpetrators, the development stagnates: At 34.7 percent, the proportion of foreign suspects has fallen slightly, but is still disproportionate to the proportion in the population (offenses under immigration law not included).

The number of crimes in asylum shelters is falling steadily, in 2020 there were 6968 cases - almost half as many as four years ago.

“We have brought much more order to the accommodations,” says Herrmann.
