Two Munich women were stuck on the Untersberg on Saturday.

The rescue operation for them turned out to be more difficult than expected.

Marktschellenberg - The rescuers of the Marktschellenberg Mountain Rescue set out on a particularly difficult mission on Saturday afternoon.

Two women from Munich * - 25 and 31 years old - got stuck on the Untersberg on the Hochthron via ferrata.

The mountain rescuers initially found it difficult to come to the aid of the women.

Rescue mission in Marktschellenberg: Fog prevents a helicopter rescue

The two mountaineers had arrived at the middle third of the climb around noon when they discovered that they could not go any further due to the snow conditions.

For them it was neither back nor forward, writes the mountain rescue service * in a press release.

The two Munich women therefore decided to make an emergency call.

The rescue helicopters * "Christoph 14" of the mountain rescue service and "Edelweiß 6" of the police from Traunstein immediately went to look for the women.

However, this turned out to be difficult because the path was covered by a thick haze of fog.

The rescuers could not initially discover the Munich women and the temperatures on the shady side of the mountain meant that they threatened to cool down.

So it was urgent.

Therefore, it was decided to drop two local mountain rescuers on the summit ridge.

They then descended - secured with the rope - over 200 meters down to the women.

That was no easy undertaking either.

They first had to look for a safe place to approach the rock face because of the snow peaks that overhanged the ridge by up to three meters.

Meanwhile, the rescue helicopter flew five more mountain rescuers onto the Scheibenkaser, who came towards the climbers in need of help from below.

When "Christoph 14" was refueled with kerosene in the large car park at Königssee, the fog cleared.

So he could now approach the via ferrata and free the two women and the rescuers from the steep face.

The remaining five mountain rescuers climbed back down to the Scheibenkaser and were picked up there with the winch by the crew of the police helicopter “Edelweiss 6”, who had already been requested to replace “Christoph 14”, and flown into the valley.

The two rescued were slightly hypothermic, but otherwise uninjured.
