After the controversy, it's time for an attempt at appeasement.

And it is Queen Elizabeth herself who takes on the role of emissary to bury the hatchet.

"Prince Harry, Meghan and their son will always be much loved members of the family," the Queen said.

Statements that come as a poll divides opinion in the UK.

According to this survey by the YouGov institute, 36% of those polled said they supported Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family, while 22% said they were in favor of the former American actress and her husband, the sixth in the order of succession to the throne, installed for a year in California.

But support for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is stronger among 18-24 year olds (48%) than among those over 65 (9%).

The latter are 55% to say they are favorable to the royal family, against 15% among the youngest.
