The interventions of the participants in the annual conference of the Professional Federation of Transport Workers Trade Union focused on the necessity of granting the necessary financial funding to the railway sector in order to complete the maintenance and rehabilitation work and to supply the railway construction company with heavy engineering machinery and equipment.
The participants demanded that workers of the railway company be granted compensation for "the nature of work and dress code", support funds for aid and end of service in union offices, include workers transporting goods with health insurance, and reconsider the decision to stop the return of those who resigned to work.
The participants pointed out the need to amend the Traffic Law, replace the prison sentence with a fine, end the point system, and replace it with a fine as well, accelerate the subway project, and include the Maritime Guidance Department and the Phosphate Directorate with heavy and dangerous work.
In his response to the interventions between the President of the General Federation of Trade Unions, Jamal Al-Qadri, that the lack of cadres and expertise is a common problem in various institutions in the circumstances in which the country is going through, and the decision to prevent the extension of workers helps to exacerbate them, indicating that work is currently underway to improve the living conditions of workers and increase salary supplements in terms of incentives and rewards. Assistant to the Minister of Transport, Firas Muhammad, indicated that there is a committee formed by the Ministries of Transport, Interior and Justice, to amend the Traffic Law, taking into account the replacement of the prison penalty with a financial fine, pointing out that there is a plan to replace the old containers in the port of Lattakia and for the port of Tartous, changes have been made regarding workers and mechanisms.
For her part, Assistant Minister of Transport Maha Raslan indicated that work is continuing to issue the railway law as soon as possible and to create a fair incentive system for railway workers, in addition to seeking to find an incentive system that does justice to the workers of the railway construction company.
The conference was attended by a member of the central leadership of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, Muhammad Shaban Azouz, and a number of members of the Executive Office of the General Federation of Trade Unions and the Vocational Federation of Transport Workers Trade Unions.
