The UAE foreign minister said alongside his Russian counterpart that cooperation with Damascus is essential to reconciliation in the region.
He even called for the return of Syria to the Arab League, from which it was suspended in 2011.
His remarks, marking the tenth anniversary of the civil war, illustrate the change in the emirates' attitude, which initially supported the rebels.

In 2018, the UAE reopened its embassy in Damascus, for the first time since the start of the 2011 Arab diplomatic boycott.
Despite this, Syria's almost complete isolation deepened after the Trump administration activated the "Caesar's Law" in 2019.
Under the law, personal sanctions were imposed on Assad, his family and associates, senior members of the security forces and the central bank and any institution linked to the atrocities in the country.
Although Assad has won the battlefield, he faces an even greater challenge to his rule, with more than 80 percent of his citizens living in poverty.
Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, did not comment on the war during a press conference in Abu Dhabi, saying Moscow was "supporting a political settlement" in Syria as well as in Libya and Yemen.
