The United States has repealed the sanctions imposed on Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler, which were issued in the last days of the administration of former President Donald Trump, the US Treasury Department announced tonight (Tuesday).
Gertler, a mining tycoon, was allegedly involved in corruption as part of existing deals in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
"The license previously granted to Gertler is inconsistent with US foreign policy interests in the fight against corruption, especially in light of the United States' efforts to combat corruption and encourage stability in the Congo," the ministry said in a statement.
The restoration of sanctions came in the wake of international human rights groups' protests against Trump's controversial move.
