Volkswagen is increasing the pace of restructuring the group towards e-mobility.

But the internal combustion engine will probably be around for a long time for some classics.

Wolfsburg - Although there is a trend reversal in the auto industry away from the combustion engine and towards the electric motor, Volkswagen * wants to offer a generation with combustion engine for some of its classics.

The VW Golf, Tiguan and Passat should therefore get a successor with a combustion engine.

VW: Not a complete departure from the combustion engine

When converting towards e-mobility, Volkswagen intends to increase the pace further.

By 2030, around 70 percent of total sales in Europe are to be made up of cars with electric motors.

In China and the USA, sales of electric cars are expected to be 50 percent.

In Europe, a sales quota for electric motors of 70 percent would mean a doubling.

For this, VW would have to build 300,000 more electric cars of the core brand per year in Europe.

Before the Volkswagen Strategy 2030 was presented, there was much speculation about whether the current VW Golf 8 might not be the last of its kind.

It is now clear that despite the announcement that it will sell more electric cars, VW will continue to rely on internal combustion engines.

"We still need the combustion engine for a certain period of time, but as efficiently as possible," explained VW core brand boss Ralf Brandstätter.

Classics such as the VW Gold, Tiguan, T-Roc and Passat * will have an internal combustion engine again, but a plug-in hybrid is also planned for these models.

The hybrid plug-in should enable a range of up to 100 kilometers.

In addition to this announcement, Volkswagen announced that wireless * software updates for the ID.3 should be possible immediately from the summer.

Furthermore, the vehicles should be equipped in such a way that all functions are preinstalled as standard and can then be called up as required.

With this project, VW wants to improve customer communication and tap new sources of money.

VW sales director Klaus Zellmer said it was conceivable that the new approach would “bring in three-digit million amounts in the coffers”.

VW: No fixed date for the combustion engine to be switched off

Some experts are critical of Volkswagen's strategy.

Greenpeace traffic expert Benjamin Stephan said in an interview with the

dpa

“This reaction is good, but it falls short.

If VW wants to secure a relevant place in the future mobility market, the group must become less dependent on the number of cars sold and rely more on services such as car and ride sharing. "

For Volkswagen, it is initially clear that there will be no exact date for the combustion engine to stop.

For the core models VW Arteon, Touran or Sharan, however, there will probably no longer be any successors.

The Passat sedan, Tiguan Allspace or T-Roc Cabrio should also no longer have a successor.
