Because of his role in the mask affair, Nikolas Löbel has already resigned his parliamentary mandate and has resigned from the CDU.
But that might not be the end of the matter for him.
Now the Mannheim public prosecutor has initiated a review process against the previous Mannheim member of the Bundestag.
The authority announced this to the "Mannheimer Morgen".
In addition, several reports were received against Löbel, as a court spokesman for the dpa news agency confirmed.
It will be checked whether there is sufficient initial suspicion to initiate an investigation.
Löbel had previously confirmed to SPIEGEL that it had collected commissions of 250,000 euros for arranging mask orders.
Accordingly, the 34-year-old offered companies from the health sector to provide them with protective masks from a company in Baden-Württemberg.
After severe criticism, Löbel first gave up his seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, resigned from the CDU and finally resigned from his parliamentary mandate.
Nüßlein continues to adhere to the Bundestag mandate
In addition to Löbel, the CSU MP Georg Nüßlein is also under pressure.
He is being investigated because of the initial suspicion of corruption in connection with the purchase of masks.
Nüßlein's lawyer announced on Friday that the 51-year-old would withdraw from federal politics because of the corruption investigations against him.
Nüßlein had last resigned from his position as vice-chief of the Union parliamentary group and left the CSU.
Nüßlein is still sticking to his mandate in the Bundestag.
Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) announced more transparency for mask mediation campaigns by MPs.
Spahn wrote on Twitter that he asked the Bundestag directorate to develop an appropriate procedure with his ministry.
