Still under the protection of the US National Guard since the assault on January 6, the Capitol will remain under surveillance for two

The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that it was extending the mission to protect the Capitol entrusted to thousands of United States National Guard soldiers by two months after the January 6 attack by supporters of Donald Trump.

The FBI is still looking for a man suspected of having planted homemade bombs the day before this assault.

Nearly 2,300 soldiers will be mobilized until May 23, a halving of the current strength.

The Capitol has been under tight security since January 6, when thousands of Donald Trump supporters gathered at the foot of the US Congressional headquarters after a speech by Donald Trump.

Several hundred of them had violently attacked the building, causing chaos.

A man is still wanted on suspicion of planting homemade bombs in Washington on January 5.

$ 100,000 reward

A video released by the FBI shows images of the suspect captured by surveillance cameras in several streets of the US capital.

Dressed in black pants and a tracksuit top, his face is hidden by a hood, mask, and goggles.

He wears gloves and holds a backpack in one hand.

The FBI had previously published photos of the suspect, including the designer sneakers on his feet, offering a reward of $ 100,000 for any information leading to his arrest.

The man is suspected of having planted homemade bombs near the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic parties, near the Capitol.

The bombs never exploded and may have only been intended to keep police away from the Capitol just before the assault.

Five people, including a police officer from the Capitol, died during the violence and several officials were arrested.

A specific risk?

Since January 6, barriers have been erected to protect the area around the Capitol and the soldiers of the National Guard remain mobilized in support of the police, but their mission was to end on March 12.

"During this additional period, the Department of Defense will work jointly with the Capitol Police to gradually reduce the presence of the National Guard," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

The Ministry of Defense announced last week that it had received a formal request from the police in charge of the security of the Capitol for a continuation of the assistance of the National Guard, without specifying if this request corresponded to specific risks.

Earlier this month, the security of the Capitol had been reinforced because of the "possible plan" to attack the building by the QAnon movement, which estimates that Donald Trump could be invested for a second term on March 4.
