Honduran President Juan Alejandro Hernandez has helped smuggle tons of cocaine into the United States, according to a lawsuit filed by drug dealer Giovanni Puentes, whose trial opened last night (Tuesday) in federal court in New York.

According to prosecutor Jacob Gottville, the president, who has been in power since January 2014, was paid for the smuggling at several meetings held in 2013.

The hearing was attended by witnesses accountant Jose Sanchez, who was at the same meetings between the president and Points and the agent of the US Drug Enforcement Administration - Brian Fairbanks.

At the hearing, Fairbanks told the jury that he had found Hernandez's email address and his cell phone number on defendant Puentes' phone.

In addition, the prosecution showed the jury pictures of the defendant's brother and son with Hernandez found on his phone.

Fairbanks also showed photos of several weapons found in the iCloud account of one of Puente's sons - including an automatic rifle he said was offered as a gift to Hernandez with the initials of his name above the trigger.

Accountant Sanchez, who worked for a rice-growing company through which defendant Puentes laundered money, told a jury that the president told Puentes at one of the meetings that "they will transfer so much cocaine to the United States that it gets out of their noses."

Attorney Shulman said he dismissed the allegations and said, "$ 25,000, that's how a president costs a bribe?"

He added that "Sanchez has a lot to gain and little to lose. He sent a request to the asylum that is still pending the immigration service."

In response to the charges against him, Hernandez tweeted on Monday that "court witnesses are expected to give false testimony."
