Tesla continues to be the measure of all things in the world of electric cars - at least, because Volkswagen is catching up rapidly.
The
Tesla Model 3
alone sold 365,240 times worldwide in 2020, according to the EV Sales blog.
For the third time in a row it was the best-selling electric car in the world and, after the factory opened in Shanghai, it was also number one in China for the first time.

The Chinese manufacturers have had to rearrange themselves since the drastic cut in subsidies in mid-2019.
What is going on again in what is still the largest electric car market: very small, very cheap mobiles.
The three-door
Wuling Hongguang Mini
, launched in July,
with a retail price of less than 4,000 euros, had 119,255 units by the end of the year, 2nd place globally.
At the beginning of 2021, the car from the joint venture between SAIC, General Motors and Wuling even picked up speed.

The electric car market has grown the fastest in Europe, led by Germany, where the
Renault Zoe is
as well ahead as in France.
Overall, the model achieved six-digit sales as global number 3: 100,431 - the basis for the "renaissance" of the new CEO Luca de Meo, even if the Zoe factory near Paris is to be converted into a recycling center.

In-house competition could be dangerous for the record holder Tesla Model 3 this year:
Tesla Model Y
, launched on the US market in March 2020, had already sold 79,734 by December.
In July, Tesla wants to start production of the Model Y for Europe in the new Brandenburg factory.

The
Hyundai Kona
, which is also available with a combustion engine,
is relatively conventional
.
The battery variant achieved sales of 65,075 units in 2020.
The fifth place should not last: In the same segment, the Koreans are already producing the futuristic Ioniq 5 of their new all-electric brand.

The
VW ID.3
, which
only started in September,
stands for the electrical
breakthrough of
the largest German group.
At the end of the year, the car from Zwickau had 56,937 sales, 6th place worldwide.
The Wolfsburg-based company's growth plans call Tesla's leadership into question.
Across all models, the group is already number two in the global electric car market, just behind Tesla.

The long-term market leader
Nissan Leaf is
growing less dynamically
.
Just a year ago, the model series launched in 2011 was considered the best-selling electric car since its inception.
In 2020, however, only 55,724 new Leafs were added, which was enough for 7th place worldwide - after 3rd place in the previous year.

The
Audi E-Tron
is the second electrical bestseller from the Volkswagen Group - and the heaviest and most expensive representative in the top ten with 47,928 units.
In Norway, the only country with a majority of electric drives in all new car registrations, the fat Audi even pushed past Tesla to the top.

A microcar from China came in 9th again: the

ventures
of SAIC, General Motors and Wuling.
47,704 of these were sold in 2020.
