In Austria, a large city is affected by the new Corona regulations for the first time.

Stricter measures will soon apply in Wiener Neustadt than in the rest of the country.

Wiener Neustadt - Austria recently changed its corona strategy.

After several lockdowns * had not achieved the desired yield, the Alpine republic is now relying on large-scale openings - on the condition that areas with high numbers of infections are isolated again.

This is the first time that this scenario affects a larger city.

On this Wednesday, the compulsory exit test in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria) came into force *.

Corona in Austria: incidence of 563 - strict conditions for Wiener Neustadt

A drastic increase in corona cases was recently recorded in Wiener Neustadt.

This is why strict exit rules now apply to the residents of the city of around 50,000, which is about 50 kilometers south of Vienna *.

If you want to leave Wiener Neustadt, you need a negative corona test * from Wednesday, the city announced on Monday.

The obligation to test should be maintained until the seven-day incidence * is below 200 for ten consecutive days.

However, this is by no means currently evident in Wiener Neustadt.

The local incidence is currently 563 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in the whole of Austria it is 185.2.

Corona in Austria: traffic light model of the federal government - restrictions from incidence 400

In terms of easing, the Austrian federal government around Chancellor Sebastian Kurz * continues to rely on a traffic light model *.

The easing steps are clearly linked to the incidence on site *.

Loosening steps taken are withdrawn from an incidence of 200, and particularly restrictive measures are to follow from an incidence of 400.

Exit restrictions and compulsory exit test.

Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) hopes that these measures will increase the test rate and thus limit Austria's corona situation to regional hotspots.

Anschober wants to implement the measures at the level of the district administrative authorities and thus "more flexible, proportionate and regional" master of the pandemic.

Corona in Austria: Test crucial "to massively reduce the spread of the South African variant"

That this approach can work has already been shown in Tyrol, according to Anschober, where corona mutations * spread and consequently stricter rules applied.

In order to travel to or from the state, residents had to show a negative corona test.

This "led to a massive increase in tests and made a significant contribution to the fact that the spread of the South African variant could be massively reduced".

In any case, Austria currently sees the way out of the crisis primarily in the increased test capacity.

In schools, for example, the number of test kits was recently increased, and a negative test result is also required for body-hugging services such as visiting the hairdresser.

Corona in Austria: Wiener Neustadt's mayor railed after incidence decision - "irresponsible"

But does Austria still have enough tests to cover the needs of an entire city?

Wiener Neustadt's mayor Klaus Schneeberger (ÖVP) is skeptical.

Because the city needs at least 15,000 tests per day, the number is currently a little more than 2,000.

"It is irresponsible - and I certainly do not do that - to control people who do not even have the opportunity to get a test," said Schneeberger on the radio station Ö1.

The ÖVP politician also called for support in implementing the new restrictions.

"In a city with 50,000 residents, 21,000 outbound and 20,600 inbound commuters, 15,000 local public transport passengers, a main thoroughfare with cars and as a transport hub for the entire region, this measure cannot be carried out without the provision of sufficient additional staff." 300 soldiers have therefore been called in for the controls.

Corona in Austria: Not only Wiener Neustadt affected - restrictions also in Pongau and Kärten

An expansion of the test roads from 16 to 40 should ensure the test run.

Since these capacities can only be increased in the coming days according to the current status, there should initially be spot checks in Wiener Neustadt when leaving the country.

Nationwide sanctions for trips without a negative test result will only apply from Saturday.

The amount of the sentence was still open on Monday.

Wiener Neustadt is not the only place that is currently particularly in focus.

The exit from the Pongau district in the state of Salzburg has been controlled since Friday (March 5), and the Carinthian Hermagor district is to be cordoned off from Tuesday.

Like Wiener Neustadt, Pongau and Hermagor are classified as high incidence areas, with 486.5 and 573 cases per 100,000 inhabitants respectively.
