Berlin - is it just an outlier?

The number of new corona infections in Germany is extremely high this Thursday (March 11th).

The Robert Koch Institute * (RKI) has recorded 14,356 new infections in the past 24 hours.

A week ago, according to the RKI data, there were 2,444 fewer - 11,912 new corona cases.

In addition, 321 deaths were reported (previous week: 359).

The 7-day incidence * increased to 69.1 (previous day: 65.4).

In Thuringia, however, the weekly value is 138.3.

Only Rhineland-Palatinate (48.5) and Schleswig-Holstein (46.6) are below 50.

According to the management report from Wednesday evening, the RKI estimates the 7-day R-value * to be 0.96 (previous day: 0.97).

The value reflects the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 96 more people.

In the past few weeks, various experts have warned of a third corona wave *.

Corona mutations appeared all over the world.

With them, the number of new infections rose rapidly.

The British corona mutation B.1.1.7 * is increasing significantly in Germany.

"A further increase in the proportion of virus variant B.1.1.7 to over 50% can be expected, as has already been reported from other European countries in the past few weeks," said the RKI in its current Covid-19 management report .

"This is worrying because, according to previous knowledge, B.1.1.7 is more contagious and probably causes somewhat more severe disease than other variants," says the RKI.

RKI boss Wieler: "In Germany the third wave has already started"

"We have very clear signs of this: The third wave has already started in Germany," said RKI President Lothar Wieler in an interview with the UN Journalists' Association (ACANU) in Geneva.

"I am very concerned." The strict application of protective measures such as wearing a mask and keeping your distance is still urgently needed despite vaccinations.

Corona in Germany - race against the mutating virus

The vaccination campaign is a race against the mutating virus.

The finish line is in sight: If there are no interruptions due to production downtimes or other reasons, 80 percent of the population could be immune to the virus by autumn.

"If that is the case, all measures can be lifted," said Wieler.

He assumes that refreshments will be necessary after the first rounds of vaccination - at what intervals is still unclear.

Notice of possible re-infection /

Exactly one year ago on March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the infections with the then novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 as a pandemic.

At the time, 118,000 infections had been reported worldwide and almost 4,300 people had died after being infected.

A year later, according to WHO statistics, there are almost 120 million reported infections worldwide and a good 2.6 million deaths.
