Terrifying pictures from Kassel: A video shows how a paramedic beats a man who is tied up - and the police do not intervene.

A video from a refugee shelter in Kassel has been making headlines since yesterday.

A short scene there shows how a medic from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) Kassel hits a refugee in the face in the presence of two police officers who is fixed on a stretcher.

"This scandal video is shocking Germany," was the headline of the "Bild" that published the recordings online.

The man's cheekbone is said to have been broken by the punch.

"Paramedics beat tied up Syrians - police officers look on indifferently," writes the "Bild", to which the video has been leaked according to its own information.

According to information from the HNA, however, the argument on the video is much longer than the scene published by the Bild newspaper.

Incident in Kassel: Man apparently rioted in accommodation

The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, November 8, 2020, in the refugee accommodation at Platz der Deutschen Einheit.

The police reported the incident at the time, but the press release made no mention of the paramedic slapping the refugee in the face.

Rather, it said that a drunk man had rioted in the accommodation and tried to attack the paramedics with a ladder.

In addition, there were several spitting attacks against the officials and the rescue workers.

After such a spitting attack, the paramedic is said to have struck.

The officers who were present at the paramedic's blow had documented this attack in their report, said police spokesman Matthias Mänz on Thursday evening.

Initially, however, the intensity of the strike was not known, which is why it was not mentioned in the press release.

How hard the paramedic hit only became clear after the Syrian appeared at the police station with the video that was recorded by the refugee accommodation's house camera.

Kassel: Man filed a complaint

The man had filed a complaint against the paramedic at the station for assault.

In addition, an investigation was immediately initiated against the police officers for preventing criminal offenses, according to Mänz.

It is now up to the public prosecutor to determine how the behavior is to be assessed legally.

After the allegations against the paramedic became known, he was released from duty and immediately given notice of termination without notice, said ASB managing director Michael Görner.
