Corona has also put a severe damper on the growth region of Munich.

Nevertheless, the experts of the planning association are optimistic about the future.

Freising

- Corona has also put a severe damper on the growth region of Munich and thus reversed a trend that has lasted for 20 years.

This emerges from the regional data published annually by the Planning Association for the External Economic Area of Munich (PV).

The FT has taken a close look at the most important data.

Zero round in the population

The population growth was stopped for the time being by the pandemic.

As reported by the PV, the region's population - as of September 2020 - has only increased by around 3,500 people compared to the previous year.

That is like a zero round.

As the PA explains, the population growth over the past ten years is mainly due to excess migration from abroad.

In other words, the number of inhabitants has increased to date because more people are “economically driven” moving to the region from abroad than emigrating.

Corona has stopped this for the time being.

“The loss of migration is particularly noticeable in Munich, as many newcomers first arrive in the city to study, complete an apprenticeship or start a new job,” explains the planning association.

Short-time work prevents mass unemployment

In 2019, around 1.5 million employees subject to social security contributions were working in the Munich region - 602,000 of them in the surrounding area.

The front runner among the districts is the district of Munich.

According to PV, around 67,000 new jobs (+ 38.2 percent) have been created here in the past ten years.

The lockdowns in spring and winter 2020 in particular had a major impact on economic development in the Munich region.

Although the number of unemployed was only marginally higher than in 2019, this is due to the abundant use of short-time work.

The number of short-time workers was over 250,000 in April and May. That is about a sixth of all SVB in the Munich region.

"However, the unemployment and short-time work statistics only include employees who are subject to social security contributions," emphasizes the PV.

It can be assumed that marginally employed persons in particular, for example 450 euro jobbers and self-employed persons, will have lost their working basis in 2020.

Nevertheless, the experts give hope.

"In the long term, the pandemic will have no impact on the economic strength and attractiveness of the Munich region for employees, trainees and students," predicts PV managing director Christian Breu.

"After two dents in 2020 and probably also in 2021, the economy will recover quickly, and people will increasingly move to the Munich region again."

Commuter numbers are falling massively

The number of commuters increased by almost 270,000 between 2009 and 2019.

In 2019, just over a million people were out and about on workdays.

Around 80 percent of them commuted within the area of the regional association.

Exit and travel restrictions, mask requirements and home office as well as closed retail stores have changed the mobility behavior of people significantly in 2020.

The use of local public transport fell sharply.

In April 2020 the passenger numbers of the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) reached only 27 percent of the winter value.

The number of passengers on the Munich S-Bahn also fell dramatically by up to 90 percent from March 2020.

Good to know:

The Munich region includes the state capital and the eight surrounding districts of Dachau, Ebersberg, Erding, Freising, Fürstenfeldbruck, Landsberg, Munich and Starnberg.

Between 2009 and 2019, the number of inhabitants in the Munich region increased by around 273,000 - to 2.93 million.

About half of them, 1.44 million, live in the eight districts.
