Chancellor Austria: Some European countries have "secret contracts" with vaccine companies
Sebastian Kurtz claims that some countries receive from the vaccine companies, contrary to EU rules, a large amount of doses from countries with larger populations.
"There are signs of 'under the table' negotiations between the countries and the companies," he said. The union denies and the opposition in the country claim: This is a spin

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz hinted today (Friday) that European countries may have signed "secret contracts" with vaccine companies, in order to receive from them a larger amount of corona vaccines than they were entitled to under EU rules.
This is contrary to the rules agreed by the member states of the Union.
According to EU rules, the distribution of vaccines among European countries will be based on the size of their population.
Despite this, Kurtz claimed that after comparing the overall procurement data of the vaccines in the member states, it became clear that "quantities in shipments do not match the quotas per capita."

"There are signs pointing to so-called 'bazaars', in which there have been further agreements between the member states of the union and the pharmaceutical companies," Kurtz said, giving some examples of irregularities in the distribution of vaccines.
"For example, Malta will receive three times more doses per capita from Bulgaria by the end of July," the Austrian chancellor noted. "The Netherlands will not only receive more vaccine doses per person by the end of June than Germany, but almost twice as many from Croatia. The European. "
In response to allegations made by Vienna, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov said he supported the Austrian Chancellor's initiative "to scrutinize the way in which the vaccines ordered by the European Commission are delivered and distributed".
Borisov, who said he spoke on the phone with Kurtz today, added that "we must continue to be united."
In the EU, allegations of "room-to-room transactions" are rejected.
A spokesman for the European Commission said "EU member states may decide they want fewer vaccines than they deserve, or more. It will be discussed between the countries, and following the results of the discussions, there may be agreement on redistribution of vaccines by the companies".
"Trying to divert attention from the chaos in which his government finds itself"
EU countries have recently come under fire following the slowness of their vaccination campaign, with countries blaming supply problems on companies.
Currently, European countries lag behind the United States, Israel and the United Kingdom in the percentage of the population that has already received at least one vaccine.
The opposition in Austria condemned Kurtz's "spin", which they say comes to divert attention from the fact that his government is in "chaos".
"Kurtz does not even know that his senior government officials are negotiating in the EU," the Social Democrats mocked.
Austria holds the vice presidency of the EU Steering Committee, which is in charge of vaccination programs.
