After the National People's Congress of China voted and passed the "Decision on Improving the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Electoral System (Draft)" on March 11, many countries have expressed concern about the situation in Hong Kong.
The foreign ministers of the seven major industrial countries (G7) issued a joint statement on the 12th, stating that Hong Kong’s dissent continues to be suppressed.
The G7, which is composed of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, and its foreign ministers and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy stated that they are deeply concerned about the Chinese authorities’ basic erosion of the democratic elements of Hong Kong’s electoral system. Refers to the decision clearly showing that the Chinese government intends to exclude dissidents in Hong Kong.
The statement mentioned that the changes passed by the National People's Congress, coupled with the large-scale arrest of democrats and politicians, undermined Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy under "one country, two systems."
The G7 and the European Union believe that the changes will stifle pluralism, run counter to the move towards universal suffrage as stipulated in the Basic Law, and also restrict the freedom of speech guaranteed in the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
The G7 pointed out that the people of Hong Kong must believe that their vote is for the best interests of the local community. Different views should not be silenced, but to achieve stability and prosperity through dialogue.
Therefore, the G7 urges China to respect Hong Kong’s fundamental rights and freedoms in compliance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration and other legal commitments. At the same time, it requires the Chinese and Hong Kong governments to restore their confidence in the political system and end unnecessary efforts by those who promote democratic values and defend freedom and rights. Suppress.
