Enrico Letta agrees to lead the Italian Democratic Party

The former prime minister, removed from the political front line since 2014, will be put to a vote to replace the resigning Nicola Zingaretti

Former Prime Minister of Italy Enrico Letta returns to the Italian political scene.

Seven years after his fall, when Matteo Renzi brought him down to take over his post, he returns to the Democratic Party (PD) to try to rebuild a situation of total crisis.

The sudden resignation of the current secretary general, Nicola Zingaretti, has forced the party to seek a coup with a contrasted figure that can reverse the climate of disappointment and decline in the polls of recent days.

Letta, a man of proven experience and knowledge, agree on the PD, he is the perfect figure.

Letta had given himself 48 hours to decide whether to accept the request - almost a plea, given the situation his party is in - to try to rebuild the Social Democratic bloc.

"I am here where last Monday I would have never imagined to present myself as a guide to that party that I helped found and which is currently experiencing a deep crisis," he explained in a video posted on his Twitter account.

"I do it out of love for politics and out of passion for democratic values."

Letta has spent the last few years dedicated to the university world.

Today he is Dean of International Affairs at the prestigious Sciences Po in Paris and President of the Jacques Delors Institute.

But he also directs the Italy-Spain forum, which has been going on for two decades.

The 54-year-old politician will speak on Sunday in the Assembly that will be held by the PD to elect Zingaretti's temporary successor in view of the next general congress that is scheduled for 2023. “I believe in the force of the word, in the value of the word.

I ask all those who vote on Sunday to listen to my words and to vote based on my words, knowing that I am not looking for unanimity.

I am looking for the truth in our relationships to get out of this crisis and look far away ”, he pointed out.

The election of Mario Draghi as prime minister was the last station that Zingaretti was able to reach before his resignation, the internal tensions and the fight to monopolize positions ended the patience of the last secretary general.

Zingaretti insisted this Friday in an interview on Rai 1 that his resignation "was not a whim" and that it had reached the point where he did not see "useful" either for training or for Italy as a whole.

Zingaretti said: "It is time to redefine our identity."

Letta's return would confirm the long tradition of Italian prime ministers of never leaving completely.

In the coming weeks it will be the case that the four main parties in number of parliamentarians that make up the support for Mario Draghi (M5S, Italia Viva, Partido Democrático and Forza Italia) would be led by former presidents of the Council of Ministers: Giuseppe Conte, Matteo Renzi, Enrico Letta and Silvio Berlusconi, respectively.
