The start of the Bayern puzzle 2021: The first question in this year's competition is about Blutenburg Castle in Munich.

Blutenburg Castle, the late Gothic mansion of the Bavarian dukes Albrecht III.

and Sigismund from the House of Wittelsbach, is now a cultural attraction as the seat of the International Youth Library.

The Blutenburg is famous above all for its palace chapel: a unique gem of late Gothic art and architecture and thus a very special cultural heritage in the care of the Bavarian palace administration.

The Blutenburg - a late Gothic jewel in the Schlösserland Bavaria

Duke Albrecht III.

von Bayern-Munich (ruled 1438-60) had acquired the small castle about 10 kilometers from his residence in the Alter Hof in Munich as hereditary prince around 1430.

At that time the present mansion was already standing, surrounded by four towers and a moat.

Albrecht had the moated castle, first referred to as "Pluedenburg" in 1432, with defensive wall, gate tower, gate construction and farm building expanded into a country and hunting seat.

Here he lived for a time with Agnes Bernauer, the daughter of a Bader from Augsburg, whom he met in 1428 and secretly married in 1432.

The improper marriage came to a violent end when the beautiful woman from Bernau was convicted of sorcery in 1435 at the instigation of Albrecht's father Duke Ernst and drowned in the Danube in Straubing, a fate that is still performed today in a festival in Straubing.

The Blutenburg owes its highlight to Duke Sigismund

The Blutenburg owes its highlight to Albrecht's son, Duke Sigismund (r. 1460-67).

In 1467 he renounced co-government in favor of his brother and retired to Blutenburg Castle, where he lived from then on and died in 1501.

The art-loving duke initiated the new Gothic building of the Frauenkirche in Munich as early as 1468.

1488-97 he had the palace chapel built in the Blutenburg, which with its artistic furnishings represents a unique ensemble of the Bavarian late Gothic of the highest artistic level.

The three original altars with their panel paintings on a gold background still stand in the intimate church under the Gothic reticulated vault.

The focal point in the center is the high altar with the representation of the Holy Trinity, to which the chapel is consecrated.

Also important are the carved figure cycle with the Blutenburg Madonna, Christ and the twelve apostles of the so-called Blutenburg master and the stained glass windows with passion scenes.

Coats of arms, as a glass window and painted on the church facade, show the noble ancestral lines of the dukes.

Since the late 16th century, the princes lost interest in the Blutenburg.

It only received renewed attention under Elector Max Emanuel.

He transferred the Hofmark Menzing to his wife Therese Kunigunde, daughter of the Polish king Johann III.

Sobieski.

After her return from exile in Venice in 1715, she had the Blutenburg repaired and used it as a princely residence when the court spent the summer in Nymphenburg Palace.

And a third lady should be mentioned in connection with Blutenburg Castle.

On February 12, 1848, Lola Montez, the allegedly “Spanish” dancer and affair of King Ludwig I, stayed here before she had to leave Bavaria for good.
