The M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District, which has been affected by many delays in construction, will take 7 years from construction to before and after opening, and it is expected to open at the end of this year.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of West Kowloon Cultural Authority Feng Cheng Shuyi said that the team is preparing for the museum including interior decoration and delivery of permanent collections. After the epidemic stabilizes, the grand opening can be held.

M+ focuses on the collection of contemporary visual cultural exhibits. The authorities today arranged for the media to take the lead in previewing. The building covers an area of about 65,000 square meters. It will have 33 exhibition halls, 3 theaters, etc., as well as a rooftop garden with a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour. A giant LED screen is also set up on the outer wall of the building. In the future, images of M+ exhibits and promotional videos can be seen from the opposite bank.

The bottom of the M+ building was originally the MTR Airport Express and Tung Chung Line railway tunnels. The team of architects pointed out that they decided to open a large exhibition area "hidden space" next to the tunnel, and the museum can place large-scale exhibits such as installation art in the future.

Approximately 8,000 pieces of works by local artists are in the collection

The M+ Museum, located next to Victoria Harbour, is one of the first facilities in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The building project was originally budgeted at 5.9 billion yuan. Construction began in 2015 and the roof was completed in 2018. The final cost of the project has yet to be "payed".

In terms of positioning, M+ is a cross-field visual culture museum, which mainly collects and displays visual arts, design and architecture and mobile images from Hong Kong, China, Asia and the world in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The museum currently has about 7,978 items in its collection, about 20% of which belong to local artists.

M+ is based on a modern fair-faced concrete design, and many bamboo branches are cleverly incorporated in the museum, which presents the characteristics of the local bamboo shed structure in a three-dimensional manner.

Admission fee to be determined Feng Cheng Shuyi: I hope most people will visit

The construction of the M+ Museum experienced twists and turns. The contractor Xinchang experienced financial difficulties, which led to project delays and the need to change the contractor. Later, affected by the epidemic, the occupation permit was repeatedly delayed.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Feng Cheng Shuyi, said that M+ will change the project contractor in 2018, and will also need to appoint a contract manager, etc., plus the delay in the delivery of materials due to the epidemic, project delays are inevitable.

She also said that after the authorities obtained the occupation permit in December last year, the team has rushed to work, hoping to regain the progress. She also pointed out that the opening of the museum is not satisfactory under the current epidemic, so it is hoped that the grand opening can be held after the epidemic eases.

As for the admission fee, Feng Cheng Shuyi said that he had discussed with the board of directors, "I hope that the most people will visit." I believe that even if the admission fee is charged, it will be relatively low.

She also mentioned that M+ will become the newest cultural architectural landmark in Hong Kong and even the world. It is the world's largest contemporary visual cultural museum after the Paris Pompidou Art Center opened in 1977, which can attract citizens and tourists to visit.

Use glazed tiles as exterior wall components to resist heat and humidity

Covering an area of about 65,000 square meters, M+ has 18 floors. The museum complex has a T-shaped structure and is constructed in a vertical and horizontal structure.

M+ is based on a modern fair-faced concrete design, and many bamboo branches are cleverly incorporated in the museum, which presents the characteristics of the local bamboo shed structure in a three-dimensional manner.

M+ will have 23 exhibition halls, 3 theaters, 1 multimedia center, 1 school building, 1 research center, restaurant, and a rooftop garden with panoramic views of the Victoria Harbour and connected to the Art Park. M+ will have a vertical building to the south. On the outer wall, there will be a giant LED screen facing the Victoria Harbour. M+ Museum Director Hua Anya said with a smile that it can be used as the museum's "big canvas" to display M+'s multimedia images and related publicity.

Cai Peixiang, Associate of Herzog & de Meuron and M+ Project Director, said that unlike the glass curtain walls of ordinary commercial buildings, M+ uses glazed tiles as external wall components, which can not only be heat-resistant and moisture-resistant, but also have a direct response to changes in the sky. If you don’t go to watch (outer wall of a building) in the same season, there is a sense of dissimilarity."

In addition, underneath the M+ building was originally a railway tunnel for the MTR Airport Express and Tung Chung Line.

The architect team pointed out that the original layout was originally a challenge, and it was later integrated into the design, and decided to open a large-scale exhibition area "hidden space" next to the tunnel, where the museum can place large-scale exhibits such as installation art in the future.
