Almost a year after the death of African American George Floyd in a police operation in Minneapolis, the city and the family reached a settlement of $ 27 million.

The city council unanimously approved the agreement on Friday, reported the New York Times and the news channel CNN.

The family's lawyer, Ben Crump, spoke of an "historic settlement" on Twitter.

This proves that the lives of black people can no longer be dismissed as "trivial, unimportant or unworthy of the consequences".

Floyd's family had filed a lawsuit against the city of Minneapolis after his violent death.

The city administration was accused of "deliberate indifference".

They failed to take action against dangerous police practices and to properly train their police officers.

In doing so, she promoted a culture of excessive violence and impunity.

The 46-year-old Floyd was killed in a brutal arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020.

The police officers pushed him to the ground in the street, the white officer Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd's neck for about eight minutes while Floyd begged him to breathe.

According to the autopsy, Floyd passed out and died.

A jury selection for the trial of the main defendant, Chauvin, is currently underway in a Minneapolis court.

He is charged with second degree murder without intent.

They are imprisoned for up to 40 years.

He is also accused of second-degree manslaughter, which could result in an additional ten years in prison.

On Thursday, the judge also admitted the charges of third-degree murder, which resulted in up to 25 years in prison.

The main trial is scheduled to begin on March 29th.

The three other ex-police officers involved could also face long prison sentences if convicted.

You are in a separate trial that is not due to begin until August 23.
