The sweet taste of sugar hides bitter facts about its danger to health, says endocrinologist Dr. “Why Hadid”. While sugars are important in the metabolism and necessary to obtain energy, too much of them increases the risk of many chronic diseases.
Dr. Hadid explained that eating too much sugar increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, depression, aging of the skin, and early appearance of wrinkles.
Studies also indicate a link between excessive sugars and Alzheimer's disease and lack of body immunity and weakness in front of pathogens, according to Dr. Hadid, who draws attention to the need to pay special attention to reduce the intake of sugars at the present time for the spread of the Corona virus, where high immunity must be enjoyed to face it.
The endocrinologist recommends adjusting the food pattern of all family members so that it contains the least amount of simple sugars and avoiding the so-called addictive state by gradually reducing white sugar and foods that contain added sugar, and focusing on carbohydrates that provide our bodies with the necessary energy instead of sugars.
Regarding the benefits of stopping the intake of added sugar, Hadid indicated that it reduces cholesterol levels, stress and weight, restores youthfulness to the skin and improves sleep, as sugars are associated with the production of some hormones that interfere with the mechanism of insomnia and thus improve our activity.
In turn, specialist in family medicine, Dr. Fayza Tabaysh, drew attention to the role of the family doctor in spreading awareness of the dangers of white sugar and sweetened drinks among family members in order to cultivate the health patterns of the child from an early age, noting that abstinence from sugar is not sufficient on its own, but must be accompanied by physical activity and drinking water Avoid smoking and any unhealthy habit and achieve a nutritional balance.
On Friday, the Ministry of Health launched the "Week without Sugar" challenge through a sports marathon that started from Nejmeh Square to Umayyad Square.
