The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that some 400,000 children could die in Yemen this year due to severe food shortages in the impoverished Arab country. .

"Are we going to turn our backs on them and look the other way?", Slammed the head of the global food program, desperate for funding.

In an interview with the Associated Press upon landing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he said the agency would need at least $ 815 million for the next six months for its operations in Yemen, but currently has only $ 300 million in its holdings.

Beasley said she may seek private donations to deal with the severe famine in Yemen, which he described as "hell."

According to Beasley, the agency will need an additional $ 1.9 billion to meet its targets in the coming year.

Beasley said he visited a hospital in the capital, Sanaa, which is controlled by pro-Iranian Houthi rebels, and saw children starving to death.

He said many others are on the verge of death for reasons that can be prevented and treated, and are the lucky ones to receive medical treatment.

He said the world needs to wake up and understand how dire the situation is in Yemen, especially for the youngest children, some of whom he has seen in hospital beds.

"In the ward or pediatric ward of a hospital you usually hear crying, and laughter. There is no crying, no laughter, there is deathly silence," Beasley said.

"It's hell. It's the worst place on earth, and it's completely man-made."

The UN warns that 16 million people in Yemen, about half of the population, are at serious risk of starvation. Tens of thousands of people are already living in starvation conditions, and aid organizations define it as the most serious humanitarian crisis in the world. Poverty UN assistance efforts have suffered from a lack of funding since the start of the war in Yemen six years ago, and the corona plague has hit fundraisers this year - less than half the amount needed.

Yemen was already the poorest country in the fourth world before the Houthis conquered the capital Sanaa in 2014 and descended south, and in response the Arab coalition led Saudi Arabia in favor of the Yemeni government in exile in March 2015. It launched a devastating air campaign and imposed a naval, land and air siege The Houthis.

Throughout the conflict, aid agencies have struggled to reach the most needy, especially in areas controlled by Shiite rebels.

Beasley says cooperation with the Houthis has improved and barriers have been lifted, but the problem now is the lack of funding.

He estimated that there would be more disasters this year if world leaders did not focus on helping the most vulnerable countries, including Yemen, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Syria.

"Around May, June and July, without huge sums of money in these places, there will be mass famine, severe damage to stability and mass migration," he warned.

Beasley mentioned the establishment of a new fund to fight hunger by private capitalists, who remained anonymous.

He said the World Food Plan is already in touch with them, but did not elaborate beyond the fact that some may be from the United States and the Gulf states.

According to him, he has already appealed to the rich of the world to contribute to the effort in some way.

"In my life, I will take every dollar from anywhere in the world to save a child's life now," he said.

He reiterated that the war in Yemen should be put to an end, but in the war zone it has only escalated recently, despite the removal of the Houthis from the list of terrorist organizations by the Biden administration.

The Houthis have stepped up missile and drone launches toward Saudi Arabia and launched an offensive to occupy the northern province of Marib province.
