Floyd, was killed on May 25 after being pinned to the sidewalk by Officer Derek Chubin for nearly 9 minutes.

The police officer charged with the act was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

"It's not just the knee of Officer Derek Chubin that was on George Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds but the blessing of the entire Minneapolis Police Department is the one that killed him," said attorney Ben Crump representing the family of the victim.

"Minneapolis has a long history of policies, procedures and deliberate indifference to the violation of detainees' rights, especially of their blacks, which underscores the need for proper training and emphasis on discipline of authority workers," Cramp added.

"The killing of blacks by the police is a 'public health crisis' in black America."

The lawyer further claimed that Floyd's death was a "turning point for policing the state".

The incident of Floyd's killing went viral and led to protests across the United States and around the world and to a variety of changes in the police and US law enforcement systems.

In addition to Chubin, three other police officers involved in the incident were arrested and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree murder.

Following the signing of the settlement agreement, Attorney Cramp said: "This is the highest amount paid in compromises for the unlawful death in the history of the United States. The death of a black person by the police will no longer be trivial, unimportant or with few consequences."

Floyd's sister, Bridget, said: "The family is pleased that this part of our tragic journey for justice for my brother George is over. We take solace in the knowledge that even in his death, George Floyd showed the world how to live."
