Noise pollution: bikers take to the air, residents are on edge

2021-03-13T18:22:37.086Z

When the weather is fine, two-wheelers can be found to stroll through the picturesque villages of Ile-de-France and Oise. At large

“When I go out to garden, it's to be quiet, not to hear noise.

At the moment, everything is multiplied since bikers do not have the opportunity to go out at night with the curfew.

»Christophe Larivière, living in Avernes, a village of 700 souls nestled in the regional natural park of Vexin (Val-d'Oise), fears the worst for this summer.

The sunny weekends at the end of February have already given her a taste of what to expect.

With the beautiful days, bikers are back.

And with them, the anger of residents who complain about noise pollution.

“We can no longer stay with the windows open.

The noise echoes throughout Avernes, we are in the middle of four roads, it is a real basin ”, continues Christophe Larivière annoyed.

The president of the Chardon Avernois association also fears a devaluation of real estate.

"Someone who wants to buy my house will hardly take it with so much noise," he explains, exasperated.

According to a local resident, "if Avernes attracts so many enthusiasts of two-wheelers in search of sensation, it is because it has large straight lines without speed bumps at the entrance of the village and a bend at the level of the D 14" .

Residents are thinking of moving

The mayor (SE), Chrystelle Noblia, confirms: “Bikers in groups of 15 or 20 pass non-stop on weekends.

More and more Avernois are thinking of moving or going to spend the weekend elsewhere ”.

Aware of these nuisances, she also organized at the end of February with a handful of inhabitants a snail operation, to offer the time of a weekend a little peace in the village ... Failing to obtain the desired development.

Why motorcycles are allowed to make so much noise

It considered, for a time, the installation of speed bumps on the D 14. However, this axis is managed by the departmental council for which "the installation of speed bumps on this type of road is not permitted by law".

In La Roche-Guyon, police patrols

About twenty kilometers away, in La Roche-Guyon, the municipality has already taken measures.

"Everyone must be able to live together", explains the mayor (SE) Capucine Faivre.

Especially since the presence of two-wheelers reaches peaks in these periods of restriction.

At the end of the first confinement, we have already seen the village square occupied by a hundred motorcycles parked at the same time.

The plot is therefore now closed on weekends.

And the municipality encourages bikers to go to the parking lot located at the entrance to the village.

But some continue to park their machine anywhere, to run the engines untimely.

“So we intervene,” says Capucine Faivre.

During fine weather, the gendarmerie patrols regularly.

The Oise, ideal playground for bikers

Parking spaces reserved for two-wheelers in Pierrefonds

In the Oise, in addition to the Ermenonville forest and the very popular Chantilly castle, Pierrefonds, with its castle, its lake and its forest… is faced with the same problems.

“It's an ideal base,” testifies Christophe, a motorcyclist from Compiegne.

Normally, you can sit on the terrace, enjoy the atmosphere.

In addition, the way to get there is nice, it's not just a straight line.

We go through forest roads, pretty villages.

"

The town hall of Pierrefonds (Oise) has put in place arrangements to accommodate bikers outside the city center and free the sidewalks.

But what bothers the most, in Pierrefonds, it is not the bikers, it is the dozens of motorcycles that sometimes squat public space.

“That will change, we are setting up a parking lot at the end of the month with spaces that will be reserved for motorcycles in the summer.

A signage system will indicate the three car parks.

We still have 800 places ”, underlines Jean-Jacques Carretero, deputy mayor.

The younger generation more respectful of living together

The French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC) has also taken up the subject.

"We have carried out several operations against the noise of certain overly sporty bikers", insists Didier Renoux, spokesperson for the FFMC, who notes a change in behavior: "The young generation is more sensitive to the argument of living together, to the environment.

However, a fringe of bikers who like to show off will not be dissuaded.

We need red lights with radars.

"

In the Chevreuse valley, we are testing the Méduse radar

Among the other places popular with bikers for their walks are Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne) or Gâtinais, in Essonne.

In the Yvelines, Saint-Forget, a village in the Chevreuse valley located at the exit of the 17 turns, is a very popular spot.

“They take the road for a race track, laments Jean-Luc Jannin, the mayor (SE).

I have no solution because I cannot do things on my own on this departmental road.

Since the summer of 2019, the community of communes of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse has been experimenting in partnership with Bruitparif with a Méduse radar which records the decibels of vehicles leaving the 17 Tournants road.

But it still takes one to two years for it to be operational.

Another is also being tested upstream of this route, near Saint-Lambert, and a third will soon be installed a few kilometers below, in Senlisse.

"Everyone is fed up with these nuisances, it's a scourge that has lasted for years," said Claude Benmussa, the mayor (SE) of Senlisse.

Open a new circuit in the south-west of Ile-de-France?

Tired of seeing things unchanged, he promises a demonstration of elected officials very soon on the D 91. Problem: if the departmental council installed baffles or speed bumps, traffic would move elsewhere, according to Luc Lepelletier, coordinator of the French Federation of angry bikers (FFMC) for the Yvelines.

“That would limit the problem on the 17 turn road but there are other spots, the bikers would go elsewhere.

"

According to him, the solution would be to open a new circuit in the southwest of the region, because the only one that currently exists, the Carole circuit, is located in Tremblay-en-France, in Seine-Saint-Denis.
