The Thuringian CDU may be facing a party donation scandal.

According to SPIEGE information, the CDU country leadership is currently still trying to clarify the extent.

The focus is on the CDU district association Suhl and the member of the Bundestag, Mark Hauptmann, who resigned on Thursday.

So far there is talk of at least one illegal party donation, which should be in the range below 10,000 euros.

As several party officials report, the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, Mario Voigt, telephoned someone from the leadership of the CDU Suhl on Thursday evening between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Voigt is currently in quarantine.

On Friday at 7 a.m., the CDU General Secretary Christian Herrgott tried to secure documents in Hauptmann's office with the person who was called by Voigt.

However, they did not have the key to access the files they wanted.

Voigt and Herrgott do not want to comment on the matter to SPIEGEL.

On Saturday, the Suhl district executive, who got wind of the incident, called a special meeting on the incident at 10 a.m.

So Lord God had no instructions from the CDU state executive, as it is said.

The main focus of the meeting was party donations, such as illegally obtained donations or unpublished donations.

An explanation of what happened on Friday morning should also be made.

In response to a request from SPIEGEL, the CDU regional chief Christian Hirte announced that Herrgott had gone to the district office in Suhl on his behalf on Friday morning to clarify the questions with the district manager.

Unfortunately, he was not there.

He himself was informed about inconsistencies in the opening act.

He rejects the claim that documents were supposed to be stolen.

»According to information from the district association, there was uncertainty about at least one donation.

This was reported to the Bundestag administration on the same day as a precaution. «The aim of him and the district association is an examination, clarification and transparency of all open questions.

Mark Hauptmann resigned his parliamentary mandate on Thursday at the urging of the Bundestag parliamentary group chairman Ralph Brinkhaus.

SPIEGEL had previously reported on Hauptmann's conspicuous commitment to the states of Azerbaijan, Taiwan and Vietnam.

In the past, Hauptmann had campaigned for the regime of Azerbaijani head of state Ilcham Aliyev, among other things.

In the meantime, advertisements from the Azerbaijani authorities appeared in the »Südthüringen Kurier« published by Hauptmann.

Taiwan and Vietnam also published advertisements in the paper.

As the SPIEGEL was assured, the party donations for the district association are not payments from the state of Azerbaijan.
