The administration of US President Joe Biden has been trying to reach out to North Korea through a variety of channels since February, but so far Pyongyang has not responded - a senior administration official told Reuters last night (Sunday) to prevent escalation.
The source noted that the administration has conducted an internal review of U.S. policy toward North Korea that includes "an assessment of all available options for addressing the growing threat the country poses to its neighbors and the international community."
The revelation that so far the United States has failed to establish contacts with North Korea raises many questions about how Biden will deal with the growing tension with Pyongyang due to its nuclear weapons programs and ballistic missiles.
The revelation adds a new dimension to the future visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, which is expected to take place next week in South Korea and Japan.
Concerns about North Korea's nuclear weapons are expected to be at the top of the visit agenda.

The Biden administration has so far been reluctant to publicly declare its policy on North Korea, saying it is conducting a comprehensive political review following former President Donald Trump's unprecedented engagement with leader Kim Jong Un, with Trump's efforts to persuade Kim not to give up nuclear weapons Succeed.
The senior official claimed that despite multiple attempts by the United States to communicate with North Korea, for more than a year there has been no active dialogue between the two, including at the end of Trump's tenure.
The source declined to speculate on how the dictatorship's silence from the Far East would affect the Biden administration, while conducting a policy review in North Korea that was due to end in the coming weeks.
In the election campaign, Biden described Jong Un as a "bully" and said he would only meet with him on the condition that he agree to avoid his nuclear capability.
Foreign Minister Blinken presented the possibility of imposing further sanctions, in coordination with the Allies to pressure North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons, but Jong Un refused to give up.
Blinken is expected to hold talks with senior Chinese officials on March 18 in Alaska.
