After the significant losses in the state elections in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, Union politicians are struggling to learn from the poor performance of the CDU.

The election evening had to be a wake-up call for the Union, said CSU General Secretary Markus Blume in an interpretation on ZDF.

"The results are also a result of mistakes and misconduct at federal level," said Blume, apparently alluding to the immoral mask deals and corruption affairs of numerous Union politicians.

It is difficult to estimate how large the proportion of these affairs is due to the poor election results of the CDU in the federal states.

Because of the corona pandemic, significantly more voters voted by postal vote - the most recent scandals about the MPs were therefore in some cases no longer included in the election results.

CDU general secretary Paul Ziemiak then also cited the corona situation as an explanation: There was no change in mood in either country, people trusted the heads of government during the crisis.

In any event, the results are worrying for the Union.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, according to current projections, the party lost almost five percentage points and fell well behind the SPD to 27 percent.

In Baden-Württemberg the loss was slightly lower at three percentage points, but at 24 percent the CDU threatens to leave the green-black government and become an opposition party.

Both federal states could in future be led by a traffic light coalition of the Greens, the SPD and the FDP.

Blume attacks the SPD

"The danger of slipping to the left in the federal election is not averted," CSU politician Blume then added on Twitter.

The Greens now have to clarify whether they are bourgeois or left-wing.

The FDP must also show its colors.

"Does she want to be a stirrup holder of green and red?" Asked the Secretary General.

"We have to work it up, we have to turn it off, which did not go properly," said Blume on ZDF with a view to the corona pandemic.

At the same time he attacked the coalition partner in the federal government.

"Anyone who thinks they can now take the next exit - like the SPD - in the direction of the election campaign is making a serious mistake because we still have the big tasks ahead of us," said Blume.

The CDU top candidate Susanne Eisenmann will no longer take part in the major tasks.

She no longer strives for a leading role in the party, said the previous minister of education.

She wanted to take responsibility for the election result, which she described as "disappointing" and "disastrous".
